'tis a shame, because maxtor is better than seagate, IMO. I wonder if this will make seagate any better? in any case, it seems that the hard drive business is getting thinner all the time...

i like seagate
their drives are quiet and reliable, and come with a 5yr warrenty.
The only (new) drive ive had that has broken was a maxtor.

hopefully they will keep the toffee outside so you can lick them while installing in your computer

I've been doing the same, but over the years I've had 5 or 6 of them die on me. Last two are a bit of a mystery as they were in a well cooled computer (I've got 3 90mm fans and a 120mm one)

The only drives I've had fail are IBM 60GXP's (a.k.a. son of deathstar) and my 2.5" Seagate 40GB laptop drive.

heat is *rarely* an issue with HDDS.

I have a tenner on bad wiring or an ill PSU.

I've had failures from Toshiba, Fujitsu and of course our good friend Quantum.

I've really only used Maxtor drives because they're usually the cheapest, but I've only had one fail on me over the years, which was quickly replaced.

Failures:

1 x Western Digital
2 x Maxtor (DOA)
3 x Fujitsu (pretty soon after arrival)
2 x Seagates which were preinstalled/2nd drives in inherited machines, but never bought one as a main drive, my main issue with them is poor performance.
0 x Samsung

Quantums were too long ago to remember.
