5punk 64 player Ranked server
Hey Guys,
I've been looking into getting our very own 64 player ranked server, with WEY's permission to call it 5punk.co.uk
for 1 month, it will cost £161
or 3 Months (10% discount)
6 Months (15% discount)
12 Months (20% discount)
and I was wondering wether anyone would be willing to contribute to the upkeep of the server.
the server will be from multiplay.co.uk (as, as far as I am aware, they are the only people to offer UK ranked server's)
Thanks
Ty

I can tell you now that:
1) it isn't worth it
2) donations won't cover nearly enough to make it affordable
3) multiplay can (and do) charge shitloads for ranked servers, because they have a monopoly on them in the UK
4) 64 slots isn't actually totally viable in the UK anyway, our connections are swamped by the data flying around, 32 is a better idea.
5) Getting a 64 slot server full, and keeping it well adminned, isn't easy
Note that i could run 2-3 *hardware* servers for that money, easily allowing for 200+ player slots (depending on the servers specs) across various games. currently i'm paying £70-odd for bukkake per month ncluding 100teamspeak slots, and the admin stuff (no longer self sufficent due to Level3 having a tantrum)

Some of my friends are part of a BF2 clan that plays together for practices three times a week and participates in ladder matches once every two weeks or so. After playing with them a few times a week, it's obvious they're all very good serious players who are dedicated to the cause. They have their own practice and gameplay servers hosted in much the same way bukkake is.
In contrast, 5punkers aren't quite that dedicated, they play on a whim with friends for a bit of a laugh, no real aspirations of clandom (for the most part) and it's all just a bit of fun.
If 5punk were to have their own BF2 server, then I get the sneaking suspicion that it would stand empty, unused and a waste of money for 90% of the time. Whereas, if you were in a clan, an empty and virtually unused server is exactly what you need for practicing tactics without retards getting under your feet.
Unless 5punk suddenly developed a 32 player clan of people that were dedicated to getting on such a server most nights and practicing tactics over and over again, then I can't see how any server (ranked or otherwise) is really worth it.
Let's all stick to hijacking servers, eh?

It's worth remembering that we did (and sorta do) have a 32 slot bf2 server, but it wasn't getting used enough to warrant it's CPU use.
however, we do now have the option of a 32 slot bf2 server (non ranked) in the 5punk on demand project (how it'll work however, needs working out with WEY and stoat)
