This, that, or the other?
I'm anticipating getting bored soon and so I'm looking out for my next game. Nothing has caught my eye recently, so I'm thinking of going back slightly in one of two (or three) directions;
The Witcher - seems popular and quirky. SP only though by the looks of it.
Tabula Rasa - I hear a lot of meh, but a few positive comments really hit home with me and make me want to play it.
Other - Viva Pinata is out this month, which I can't help liking the look of (although I'd prefer it on the Wii). I'm open to other suggestions.
Anyone care to sway me?

The first one of those is likely to be the only one I play again and mean to do so reasonably soon. The roller-coaster difficultly curve was a bit irksome, though.
TR crashed almost immediately after doing the very first "go over there and open that box" mission, but I was already hating the control method and menus by that point.
Viva Pinata is all very jolly, but didn't really grab me - after about ten minigames getting worms to copulate I just found it tedious that I had to do everything myself. It's kind of Animal Crossing/Harvest Moon-ish in that it probably works best when your brain feels like taking the day off.
All are good if you're in the mood for them, but I've typically found other things I'd rather do.
Edit: Also good call on replaying Oblivion, that's probably higher on my list, as I barely scratched the surface of the Shimmering Isles.
Right now (as you may have noticed) I've been replaying Neverwinter Nights 2. I bought the expansion before realising I'd only done part of the first chapter of the original, so I thought I'd quickly whizz through it to pick up the story. 50 hours later and I still haven't finished it. It still runs like arse when a load of spells all go off at once, despite several million patches.

I just couldn't get into Oblivion. Too many things going on at once that distract me from the main quest. I had the same problem with Stalker, and it made me feel like I was always missing some of the game. It's possible I could get the same problem with The Witcher.
I've seen TR likened to CoH by one of its biggest fans (Kieron Gillen), and some of you lot who've played it have enjoyed it. And I like the idea of a sci-fi MMONG, because I've never really liked fantasy (or super heroes for that matter).
FJs comments on Viva Pinata sound like what I was expecting, but in a good way. Apparently though you get helpers who will start to do some of the more tedious tasks later.

I ordered it, but due to a combination of me being a bit thick and Pay Pal being shit I sent it to an old address, and I'm trying to see if I can get it sent to me.spoodie wrote: I don't like RTS games and I played a couple of levels of this and enjoyed it a lot, even replaying one to do it a bit less spazzy. I must play some more.
edit: yes, everyone laugh at the dumb american who type in the wrong werdz.

I found this very similar in feel to C&C3, in that I feel either utterly in charge/hopelessly outclassed at times, only to hit a "trigger" at some point which completely reverses that feeling - then upon finishing the level realise how easy it was all along and feel inclined to "do it again properly".deject wrote:World in Conflict!!!!
This kind of stop/start way of playing means I never really got into either game, which is primarily, I admit, because of my "completist" nature - but also a bit of a flaw in their composition that said triggers are so obvious that it turns (for me at least) the game into more of a linear series of challenges which must all be utterly mastered before progressing, rather than the devil-may-care "just scraped through that one but will carry on regardless" attitude I get from more empire-buildy RTS titles like Dawn of War, R/MTW or Settlers.
Certainly it's a good example of it's particular genre (way better than the stupid trigger-based game-ruining arse that is CoH) - not as micro-managery as AoE, or as macro-detached as SupComm - I think it's just the scenario of one-at-a-time battles, without me directing the direction of the overall war that doesn't quite engage me.

i played a swept version of witcher...seemed pretty cool...nice new taste of a RPG...interesting story...but was quite annoyed with all the load screens! Also, it seemed like a teenager was in charge here and there. Like, every time u go into the pub...you hear someone say, "Your mom sucks dwarf cock!". It was funny the 1st time...but not every time lol. I'll watch Southpark for that kind of humor...
definitely worth a sweep...maybe the new patches tweaked it better

I agree with you on Oblivion. Seems like everyone is tryin to be "non-linear" yet are still linear but disguising it with crap loads of inconsequential stuff to do off the rightous path of the endgame.Dog Pants wrote:I just couldn't get into Oblivion. But as far as witcher goes...from the 12 hours or so I played it...it was somewhat linear but had just enough things to do around town to have a bit of variety while still focusing mostly on the main plot...
Played all, most of them for a good amount of time. I didn't like the Thief series (I just don't get stealth).buzzmong wrote:I take it you've played:
Fallout 1 and 2, System Shock 2, Thief 1 and 2, Deus Ex, Baldur's Gate series?
If not, play the one's you haven't.
PotBS didn't really capture my imagination, and I don't get on with RTSs (especially not C&C alikes - I hate that game).

Fuck off! Really?
I love this game so much I want it's shiny disc like children. It's in my all time classic list of beard games with fallout and space hulk. I've played through it with every single standard character class, and some custom classes I've made myself. The best time was as an evil paladin, I killed, robbed and was a thoroughly nasty bastard, and my evil powers grew stronger as a result!
I'm playing the witcher again, took some time off when I got flung away from one part of the world to another and I gathered around me a shitload of quests, too many at that particular point, so it got a 'ah fuck this', but I'm back into it now and I'm enjoying it. I just put my genetically mutated cock in a goddess too!
