HL2 on Xbox

I floor sourced this yesterday and played a little bit, I have to say I was quite impressed with the graphics and everything i've seen so far is exactly the same as the PC version (game and gameplay wise)
Obviously it's not as pretty as full whack on a PC and it does slow down a bit during heavy fighting but i'd say they've done a very good job of porting in over. Some of the lighting is still
very impressive
I'll more than happy to play it through again on't Xbox (one advantage being it's on my big widescreen TV)

to Valve (No annoying Steam updates on Xbox!!)

to EA (cos I floored it)

But... But an FPS on a console? With a joypad?
It's... not.... natural.........

yeah, im with the "its not natural" side of the argument. Consoles are better than PC's at certain genres. FPS aint one of them.

PC genres that shouldn't be on a Console:
First Person Shooters
Real Time strategy
Console genres that shouldn't be on a PC:
Racing Games
Beat-Em-Ups
Dance-Mat games

this
there's only a few FPSs I've played on PC that beat the experience of playing Halo on the Xbox, back when it was first released

And sports games don't work on PC.

Of course FPS games should be on consoles! (Goldeneye anyone?!...)
It's never going to be the same experience but they're still immensely playable and enjoyable on a console, It's not as nice to play as with a mouse on a PC but it still works

this is true.
though i feel the whole 3d-ness of fps games nowdays makes using a joypad more difficult.

That's the problem, whenever someone's asked to name good console shooters, Halo and Goldeneye are the few that turn up. And both are aging a little bit. Most others are badly implemented, or have a godawful control system.

Oddworld Strangers Wrath is a good semi-FPS

Agreed, there are few truly great console FPS games, but I think that most FPS games that are rubbish on consoles are because they are rubbish games all round, not just because they're on a console
I'd say that trying to port an awesome PC FPS game (like Half 2) would be a recipe for disaster, but in this case they've done a great job
Anyone played Doom 3 on Xbox?, how did that play?

If Microsoft had an ounce of sense, they'd be releasing a keyboard/mouse setup for the 360.
If they did, I might think about buying one

Why dont you just play it on a PC and be done with it?
I find it a bit odd people trying to turn their console into a PC to play a game that is most likely cheaper, faster, and looks nicer on the PC.

It's because people get frustrated with constant upgrades, patches, crashes etc, which are eliminated when using a console instead.
I know of 2 people here at work who are online PC gamer's who are going to move away from the PC al together once they get their 360.
It wouldn't suprise me if a lot of people are thinking the same, however as I've already said, I just can't get on with FPS games using a controller.
Personally I'm a bit pissed that my 6800 128MB is already looking a tiny bit dated, as I can't run COD2 on highest settings without having bad lag.
However I'm gonna stick to PC gaming, as it's familiar, and the games are a lot cheaper, and of course I've got you lot to look after

Yeah, Graphics cards piss me off.
They seem to get outdated so quickly, but the ones in consoles seem to last a good 4 years before they're considered shit.

Well, thats a bit of a bogus argument. Its not that you dont have to upgrade or patch, so much as you *cant* upgrade or patch.
Ive not spent more than £100 in one go on upgrading my computer for years. Its probably cost me a bit more in the long run than keeping up to date with a console, but then to keep up to date with consoles you have to spend multiple hundreds in one go. The kind of cash I never have all at once.
As for crashes and patches: You do get crashes. Lets not forget that an X-Box is essentially a specialised PC. Its not some magic code fixing device. If the code is buggy, it will crash. I have managed to crash games on the x-box before. Except with a console, if a game is released with a bug they didnt notice, theres fuck all they can do about it. But with a PC, they can fix it, via patching.
And lets not forget that a lot of patches dont just fix bugs, they fix design flaws and add stuff to the game, often making the multiplayer experience a whole lot sweeter.

But with the cost of a top notch graphics card alone at the same price as a console it is much more expensive to play games on a PC,
During the time I've had my Xbox i'm on my 2nd graphics card to keep up with modern PC games, yet they've released HL2 and Doom 3 which look great on the aging Xbox
People don't buy consoles as PC replacements, they buy them because It's always gonna be cheaper to play games
and you dont have to mess about with patches, drivers, compatibility issues.
Edit: You show the back of PC game box to a mum or young kid, Whaa? what's all this techno babble?, if all you need to know is it runs on A, B or C console it's a lot more straightforward

Final argument:
The internet has porn.
You cant look at as much porn on any console as you can on a PC.
Discussion: END!
