OK, I bought the Orange box

:w00t:

I played HL2 when it first came out but may run through it again as I recall it was fun / not too long and I have upgraded the GFX card since then so it should be all lovelier

From posts in here it seems that ep1, 2 and portal are all well worth doing which leaves us with TF2. Anything I shuld know about this? I see it's a regular wednesday night fragfest so I suppose I should load it up and get connected.

See you there this / next wednesday :ahoy:

Yes, get on TeamSpack, at the very least only to listen in.
The added 5punk makes teef much better than it already is due to added lols.

Also get CoD4 :)

OK, I have TS already, use it for eve, I'll fire it up for TF2 aswell

I bought OB on steam though so still have some downloady to go (HL2 done, will move on towards the rest this evening)

I tried COD4 demo and enjoyed it, but it's not too happy on my old PC. I only have 1/2 Gig of ram, which is sadly an old standard (RIMM) so expensive to upgrade and a 6600 AGP GFX. Plus I need another HDD :D

early next year sees new PCage (budget as yet undecided, currently drooling over the idea of the new alienware lappys but no, it won't be one of them)

You dont need SM3.0 to run cod, it worked just fine on my X800gto (Which is only a SM2.0)

*Resists until all this game of the week fad stuff has worn off

There's too much omg-must-play-this-game going on right now. So far this month you've been through portal, teef, then cod. Even with sweeping, I'm not interested enough to bother.

COD works fine on my machine, it is on low gfx and at 640x480 - but it doesn't feel like it's on low quality, in fact I only noticed my resolution when my monitor told me so, it felt like 800+

Come on Hulky, pretty please? Just one little try of CoD MP with the 5punkers.

Pretty please with a cherry on top and a bumming by Amblin when he's playing?

OK

got Teef loaded up last night and managed to get onto a random server which had no players on it. ran around as the heavy dude shooting up infrastructure with the minigun just to see how it ran, which wasn't too great actually. Same prob running HL2, small stops, especially during cutscenes in HL2. Fiddling with the gfx settings seemed to lock the PC up for 10 minutes at a time with the HDD LED on full burn so I figure I'm having fragment / read speed issues.

Managed to get nto the 5punk server and piggybacked hehulk on spectate for 5 mins, but the lumpiness was still there. Tried to dumb down the res a bit but then it hung up completely.

Left the PC to defrag this morning (20% space free, 15% fragged) so we'll see if that improves matters when I get home.

Question (coz I've been thinking about doing this for a while anyway) how easy is it likely to be to upgrade the HDD?

I have a 4 year old (actually maybe 5 :faint: ) fairly standard Dell Box
The current drive is a WD 80G
I have an external drive easily big enough to back up to (320G or something)

what is the process to swap in a new drive / add one?
Do I just plug the new drive into the 2nd IDE, mirror the existing drive onto it, shut down, put the new drive onto the primary and boot?

Fairly easy job, just not a fun one.

That might work, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Best practice would probably be to remove old drive, install new one, install windows, transfer stuff from old drive.

Easier way (but probably much slower) would probably be finding something like acronis trueimage, using that to take an image of your old drive (probably on to your external drive) then restoring that on to your new drive (may also involve partition fettling)

However, the imaging method will probably need leaving overnight on such a full drive. (though I think you can specify what gets imaged)

Whatever, it's a bastard job, and probably kinda silly to buy a new PATA drive.

hmm, I just knew it would be more complex than thought

I know I need a new PC, just can't quite afford one at the moment. The missus just made me book a big holiday for next easter so funds are all of teh low until the new year.

O/clockers systems OK? I know you refer to them a lot for component picing. their gamer systems seem to take a leap from about 650 to 2 grand....
