Monitor Interference
I've recently noticed that the corner of my monitor would randomly lose a color (Red, green or blue). I thought the monitor was dying, as I got it second hand (it's hard to beat free!), however, on and off chance, I moved my PC case away from the offending problem and it seemed to rectify the situation. Here's a few things that had popped into my head.
I recently enabled the front Microphone and headset jacks. I removed the offending wires, rejumped the setting on my mobo, and it seemed to not be interferring AS BADLY, but there was still some interference.
So this has me concerned. I know that there's some sort of interference going on from my case. Should I be worried about the affect this will have on my hard drives, or other hard ware in the box? I have the case moved away as far as I can from the PC so there's no issue with the monitor, but I'm just concerned for anything else that might get screwed up with. Any input oh wise hardware types?

I think putting the PSU in there wasn't too bright.

So do you think it'd be okay to go back and hook up the front panel audio again? And are you serious on the grounding bit? How would I go about doing that?Dr. kitteny berk wrote:hmm, sounds odd.
mostly i wouldn't worry too much, hard drives are pretty reliable these days, just be sure to backup the important stuff now and then.
probably something odd, try earthing your case using a bit of cable :D

Hmm, in the UK the earth pin in the mains plug connects to the PC's case - but you only have 2-pin mains plugs don't you? My Dad used to clip stuff to the radiators as an earth when working on stuff.Nickface wrote:So do you think it'd be okay to go back and hook up the front panel audio again? Yeah, radiators and suchlike are good for earthings. Just need something to make a contact between the case and the radiator, such as a bit of wire. That would do it.
I once used myself to earth a homemade tv aerial by holding the right bit of wire and sticking my finger in the mud, all so we could watch a football match on telly whilst sitting in a field. I dont even like footie.

Our plugs in the US typically have the two power thingys (technical term) and a ground plug. On a side note, I reattached the front panel audio stuff, and when I move it closer, I'm getting as much distortion as I had without it. So I'm going to run it for a while as see how it goes. I took the cover off of that side and from what I can tell, the most interference comes from where the IDE cables are going into the motherboard. My initial fix has just been to move the case as far away from the monitor as possible.

we use plugs shaped a bit like that, but a lot more enclosed for outdoor use on 110V loads which makes sense as thats what you guys use anyway.
have a look at all your cables inside the case and make sure you havnt pinched a wire installing a HDD or somthing daft. also you could try licking your finger touching the case and holding a radiator
(if you do decide to try this, use the back of your hand. we dont want crispy nickface do we?)
although when you say colour loss, it makes me think broken or wobbly pins in the moniter cable. if you have an old cable lying around have a go at swapping them over, although if its more than one colour probably not.
its a bit queer non the less
