If you touch your software enough does it become hardware?

Gunslinger's b0rked PC

Post by Lee »

Gunslinger just phoned me saying his PC won't boot past the windows loading screen, when it gets to that point it just restarts itself again. I've told him to try reseating various parts in his computer, if that doesn't work does anyone else have any ideas?

Look at Tezz's thread.

Basically, if it's windows, try safe mode.

Otherwise, stick the CD in, boot from it and repair / reinstall windows ontop of itself (without wiping if you've got stuff you need to save on the boot partition)

Perhaps he turned his base unit into a tank and windows can't handle the moving of two wheels at the same time AND an Anti Virus suit.

resetting bios might work.

usually i find that issue is caused by the PnPOS setting.

try changing it to whatever it isn't.

How would I go about resetting the bios?

I've somewhat convined myself its the grfx card overheating/dying, since it started when css got spazzy trying to run it after hours of the comp running in a boiling room

as your computer boots fine.

Best bet is entering the bios on boot (usually F1 or delete to open it)

Find the last page (usually) there should be an option to reset to default (usually load defaults or factory settings or something)

then choose to save and exit bios (usually F10) and accept changes etc.

And now the PC is inexplicably working fine. On a whim I decided to give it one more shot at loading up before resetting the bios or re-installing drivers and... it worked. I keep getting the feeling this is a case of baaad overheating, maybe after a few hours of cooling down (window open, door open, fans on but no computer [and also removed it from stuffy corner]) it seems to have a bit more life left in it. Now to figure out what's overheating and replace it or supercool it.

Coretemp and atitool (works on nvidia) FTW.

I'd leave them running for a while, if nothing looks too bad when idle, maybe use atitool to cook graphics and orthos to cook your cpu.
