In the absence of another tutorial on skill training (tut tut Joose!) I've decided to make my own. It's a bit rough and ready but you'll get the idea.
Skills are what allow you to be able to do the things you do in the world (or 'universe') of EVE. Different skills are needed for different things, and some need to be trained to different levels.

This is my character with all his lovely skills. This is what you see when you first click on the Character button in the top left of the screen. The menus are collapsible to show the lovely, juicy skills inside: thusly...

Notice the skill 'Iron Will' with the lighter coloured square in the box to the right. This flashing box indicates that the skill is the one currently being trained. If you mouse-over this skill, it gives you the time remaining until the skill training is completed. When this happens, you will recieve an in-game e-mail (EVE-mail) to inform you of this.
Skills work on a 'Rank' system. A rank 1 skill is the easiest to learn, any higher rank will take longer to learn. An example: A Rank 1 skill will take about 15 minutes to train to level 1, whereas a Rank 2 skill will take 30 minutes (twice as long), Rank 3 takes 45 minutes, and so on. Expect to wait a while for Battleship skills, 'cause they're Rank 8.
To advance a skill you already have, right click on it and choose 'Train to Level X'. Don't worry if you're already training one, you won't lose any progress you've already made.

Here, I can see that Standard Missiles will take 1 hour, 54 minutes and 23 seconds to train to level 2. Also notice the '16% done' bit. This means I've already trained part of this skill then got bored and trained something else.
Just a note: Skills train in real time. For example, if I wanted to train a skill that was going to take 8 hours to train, I could set it at 2pm, switch EVE off and go do something else, then come back and have it all trained up by 10pm, without having been logged in. But, since EVE players don't have a life outside EVE, you'll probably train it when you go to bed instead.
So you want to train a new skill? Go to the market!

I've decided I want to train the skill 'Amarr Battleship'. Joose, if you're reading this, stop sniggering. STOP IT! *ahem* So, I find my way through 'Spaceship Command' and find the 'Amarr Battleship' skill from the main window on the right. You will need to purchase this, by the way, try and find one that's as close to you as you can manage without paying through the nose for it.

But what's this? A red square next to the skill? That means I can't train it yet! Click on the 'i' next to the pic to find out where this is going wrong.

Ah, here's the problem! I'm not allowed to start learning Amarr Battleship until I've finished training Amarr Cruiser to Level IV (4). Train Amarr Cruiser up a bit and try again when you have level 4! This is the same for all skills.
Well, I think that's it. Let me know if I've missed anything out.

EDIT: I know what I've forgotten.... the 'Learning' skills (important bit kiddies)! I'll put these in at a later date (probably tomorrow).

I think that's going to be the problem. There are loooooads of skills and loads of different ways you can go in this game. If i'm to be honest, the way I find out what skills to train is by seeing what I want to buy, finding out what skills are needed, then training them. There's nothing particularly magic about it.
