Either my PSU or motherboard is dead

The light on the back of the psu turns on when I press the PSU switch to on, but the LED on the motherboard doesn't light up and the power on button does nada.

I don't want it to be the mobo, am I wrong? ?

When I power on the PSU (with the button at the back) I can hear a very high pitched whine, when I turn it off the whine decreases then disappears, 've read a few stories about the Hiper PSU's going to shit which is why I assume that is the problem

I'm gonna try the PSU from my old PC to see what happens, BAH

psu check is easy.

unplug it from all your hardware, then short the green cable with one of the black ones near it. (just use a bit of wire)

As long as the wire is in, the PSU should run.

Mobo is more difficult. first port of call would be pulling everything and seeing if it'll live with just the cpu mounted. if it does add the ram (most often the issue, IME) and repeat until something kills it, or doesn't.

That sounds like a PSU with roasting caps.

Almost definitely that, I've had the same thing before, hopefully its not decided to fuck anything else up because it feels like it (my psu failure took 1 piece of ram and a gpu with it, dunno how the other bits of ram survived, but they did)

Sounds like PSU, but please test your old PSU with an empty board as berk suggested - you don't want more failures from underpowered/spiky running of decent kit. Broken/dodgy PSUs are the #1 underpublicised killer of a lot of valuable hardware in PCs.

Better test would be the Hiper PSU with an old/trash mobo/PC, so at least nothing good gets broken.

Did a test with the PSU from my server and the mobo power light came on, didn't want to go any further than that

I doubt it's still under guarantee so looks I'm shopping for a new PSU

So....

I got my new PSU but something is still broken

Mobo power light comes on, all fans spin (ones off the mobo), 8800 fan spins up but..

I get no post beep at all, I unplugged things one by one, I got down to just the CPU in the mobo (and power of course) and it still wont beep at me. Even without any RAM in.

I have no idea now what to do to determine if my CPU or MOBO (or both) is broken as I have no other PC's to test a Core 2 Duo in, or even any DDR2 machines to test my memory in. I am optimistically going with the assumtion that only one of them is knackered, what are the chances of being able to RMA the broken part and get a new one?, could they tell if my PSU killed it and deny a replacement?, but then I don't even know which bit to request an RMA for!

try without the cpu in, often that'll make it make a noise.

Try resetting the BIOS (You can often do it by shifting jumpers around the MB or if you're not sure, post the model and i'll see what I can dig up)

Maybe try reseating the CPU as well? Shouldn't make any difference at all but in my experience try anything and everything!

Done the BIOS reset, decided to leave reseating the CPU till another day as I was getting more and more frustrated with it, and more and more drunk as I went on!

Will have a look at the CPU tonight, might have to try and RMA both the CPU and motherboard even if it's only one that's gone.
