There may be other flying options in FTB, but this is likely the easiest to get from the start. To get a good source of energy to power this and your other machines you could use the following:

1. Get tin bars.
2. Make a stack of cells.
3. Find a lava source and right click with the cells until they're all lava filled or as many as you can (they stack).
4. Make a geothermal generator.
5. Dump lava cells in the generator, as many as required.

Devices you want to charge go in the top slot of the generator. This is very basic and ideally you should dump your energy in to a batbox or other storage device, but it's enough to get you plenty of power to begin with.

I have a series of 13 batboxes linked together to store energy produced from only 4 solar panels. This gives me over half a million EU when I need it, though it will take quite a lot of time to completely charge the system again once depleted it does mean I no longer use fuel for charging tools and using machines - even smelting now I have an electric furnace.
The main holdup for me at the moment is glow stone, needed for compact solar panels for my railcraft farm and for the jetpack.

Couple of things to note:

Servers will be down next Thursday for maintenance/upgrades. Going down in the morning, back up in the evening.

Secondly, IC2 is spamming the balls out of the logs. It doesn't seem to be causing any actual problems, but keep an eye out for odd behaviour.

Well, I found some tin.

It could take a while before I'm flying. I miss being able to conjure stuff out of my arse, but it's good to finally learn the other stuff - EE made it all a bit superfluous.

I have run a track to your place Joose, I didn't want to drive through the wall of your castle so I have left it where it burst out of the side of the hill -383 +235(ish) elevation 65.
There were casualties. A rubber tree got in the way before I could shut my mining cart down, but I have a spare sapling somewhere if you need. The track should take you to my base but if you can run the track through your place whichever way you want I will circuit it back to spawn village. Currently rails are not powered but if you take a powered cart the trip to my place takes about 5 minutes, should take half that with a mine cart at full speed.

Hurrah! Cheers, ill have a look when I can. Don't worry about the rubber tree, I've cultivated a forest of the things out back.

I found the sentry guns from the Portal gun mod, very dangerous.

I am unhappy. I found a portal gun in a monster chest, and it was awesome. Then I took a Nether portal near my house and followed torches to what I assumed would be another portal. It was a fortress, with things that killed me. So now I have no more portal gun.

That's a shame because those guns are very expensive, requiring a nether star which you get from killing the Wither boss monster. Which in itself is not easy to get to spawn.

In the Twilight Forest I presume? That place needs more investigation, but it's a bit unnerving.

I remember somebody produced a satelite-style overview of previous servers, any chance we could get one?

I have done, but not lately. With a copy of the world files I expect this would be useful:

I don't imagine the server host will allow a real-time, online map.
