I've a horse outside vs Mad Dogs & Deadmen

With the dwarf Horses facing off against their first undead opponents, there was some concern before the game about the terrible smell. Fortunately the Mad Dogs didn't seem to mind.

The Horses kicked off with the ball ending up near the right flank and the Mad Dogs moved quickly to pick it up and cage the ball carrier. Uncharacteristically, the dwarven scrimmage found themselves on their arses, so were forced to revise their usual strategy of flattening the opposition, instead choosing to surround the players protecting the ball and glare at them menacingly.

This seemed to distract the normally unperturbable necromantics who, when probed by an exploratory dwarf dropped the ball, which bounced out of bounds. The ball reappeared near the Mad Dog's touchline, where a greedy dwarf was able to seize it and open the scoring for the Horses.

The rest of the half saw the Mad Dogs shield the ball in the centre of the pitch, but time ran out before they could make anything of it.

Receiving in the second half, the Horses kept two runners back, before making a dart with a small cluster of dwarves down the right hand side. Reacting to this the Mad Dogs were quick to try and box them in. Seeing their tactics being used against them enraged the dwarves and prompted a furious couterattack, punching away the attentions of the necromantics overcommited on the right, and switching play to the poorly-defended left while ganging up on the group of flesh golems and zombies in the middle, flattening them. The Horses score another TD, almost unopposed.

After the kickoff, the Mad Dogs attempted a run down the right, with Horses covering it with two troll-slayers. In a bizarre sequence of play which saw one troll-slayer dead and the other on his back, the Mad Dogs were clear and blocked off access to the ball-carrier from the left. The heroic troll-slayer managed to get up and give chase, but unluckily failed twice to make the tackle and found himself back on the ground. Mad Dogs scored, and the time ran out.

I've a horse outside 2 - 1 Mad Dogs & Deadmen

Virile Vanguard Vs Da Big Fellas

The newly bolstered ranks of Ogres, fresh from their recent slamming of Chaos, stared down the elves, but the elves were defiant, trusting in their agility to keep them safe.

The Big Fellas fans were clearly not keep on this showing of defiance, and the game kicked off with a pitch invasion, leaving not a single elf standing up. The ogres quickly took advantage of this unusual start, and secured an early touchdown. The elf confidence started to look misplaced, as more and more corpses hit the Vanguard dugout.

Despite the early ogre scores and missing half their team, a truly heroic show of the Vanguards speed and skill quickly evened the score, with the Ogres able to do nothing but stare in horror (and occasionally punching someone) as the elf score ticked up to their well earned, but extremely costly win.

Result: Virile Vanguard 3 - 2 Da Big Fellas

A breakdown of the casualties from my game with Joose:

3 dead (two £100,000 catchers and a £110,000 blitzer).
1 Badly injured linesman
1 Broken neck for a thrower.

My expensive elves!

Yes it was rather, my first win has crippled my squad skill wise, I don't think the Vanguard will be much of a challenge for the rest of the season.

Virile Vanguard Vs Mad Dogs & Deadmen

This match proved to be an interesting one as the squads had both received a recent hammering, forcing the use of unskilled mercenaries to bolster their numbers, with Mad Dogs & Deadmen fielding one and the Virile Vanguard sporting two.

The match started badly for both teams, the elves ballsing up a pass and one of the Mad Dog's Wights fumbling the pickup after running into position, forcing the ball off the pitch. A throw-in to the centre of the field saw the Vanguard pass the ball to a lone catcher who proceeded to rush up side of the field close to the Mad Dog's back markers. This proved to be foolish as the Mad Dogs promptly smashed the catcher's ankle and slowly moved the ball back down the field, knocking over any elves that tried to stop them, resulting in Coach P-Nut's first touchdown of the league.

Things were looking grim for the Elves who couldn't dent the Mad Dog's high armour and didn't have the mobility offered to them by their specialised players.

The restart saw the ball end up at the side of the pitch, where a play by the Vanguard was scuppered by a zombie shuffling into position. Backup for the Mad Dogs came in the form of a Wight who promptly knocked the ball carrying elf over. A quick dash and pass from a fellow elf had the ball flying over to the other side of the pitch, allowing the elves to push up into the fists and claws of a Ghoul and a Wight, who promptly stopped the run by KO'ing the elves involved.

Despite spirited encouragement by both coaches during the break, the second half saw slow progress by both teams, showing up the lack of skilled players on the field.

The Mad Dogs eventually managed to horse the ball down the right side of the pitch, getting involved in a brawl as elven linemen ran in to halt their progress. A couple of knockdowns and a fumble later saw the Vanguard picking the ball up and managing a lucky pass, getting the ball out of the brawl. Trying to capitalise on this opportunity the elves tried to do a runner but the resistance proved too much, causing an elf to fumble a pickup of the now loose ball.

In an unfortunate twist of fate, the Mad Dogs also fumbled the pickup, resulting in the ball bouncing off the pitch and into the crowd.

When the ball was finally returned and the puss wiped off, it was catapulted into the empty middle of the pitch. Using their speed advantage the elves were quick to capture the ball and the free space allowed them to run down to the Mad Dog's touchline unhindered, equalising the score in the final minute of the match.

Result: 1-1 Draw

Mad Dogs & Deadmen Vs The Special Uncles

The Special Uncles kicked off to start the match, launching the ball deep into the Mad Dog's half stopping close to their touchline. The ball was then able to take a breather as both teams ignored it and set about laying into one another instead with the heavies on both teams taking one another out. One of the Uncles gets a bit overkeen in his fouling and is sent from the field. The ball is moved back towards the centre. Eventually one of the Uncles gutter runners manages to get hold of the ball, break through the line and charges up the field only to be taken down by the defence. He is then able to get up and manages a triple dodge to get the ball back and make another run for the line. He is once again felled by the defence but manages to break the jaw of his attacker in the process and on his next move is able to scrabble to his feet and get the ball over the line for the first touchdown of the match! With almost no time to go before halftime the Uncles punt the ball deep into the Mad Dogs half where they threw it back towards the middle, fumbled it and brought the first half to a close with the Special Uncles leading by 1 - 0.
The second half starts with a poor kick by the Uncles to hand possession back to the Deadmen, who then proceed to knockout one of their opponents. The Uncles appear to have forgotten about the small matter of the ball and begin attacking and fouling their opponents with little regard for what is going on elsewhere.
Meanwhile the Deadmen push down the right in a powerful move, which is brought to a brief stop by one of the Skaven resulting in both players being knocked down and the Deadmen player being knocked out. Undeterred the deadmen manage to create a channel down the right touchline for the ball carrier to charge down, however this too was finished when the Skaven were able to horse him off the pitch where he was set upon by the fans. The Skaven then retrieve the ball and manage to sneak it out of the corner, put 2 throws together and break through the Deadmen’s line for the second touchdown!

The kick-off is caught but the defence manage to repeatedly bring down the runner to prevent another touchdown and the match comes to an end with the Deadmen suffering 2 casualties but both teams surviving the match with all their players alive.

Mad Dogs and Deadmen 0 – 2 The Special Uncles

The Special Uncles Vs Da Big Fellas

The Skaven were clearly nervous as they squared up against the Ogres, and their nerves seemed well founded as the Ogres begin laying into them from the off, causing knockdowns and forcing them right back to their line. The Skaven then pull off an almost unheard of event as they succeed in injuring on the ogres (and it only took 4 of them laying into him as he lay on the floor). Basking in the temporary glory of this incident the Skaven attempt a cross-field run and throw but the catcher fluffs it and the ball is quickly surrounded by Ogres. As the Skaven attempt to halt the latest charge they are able to take down the runner but at the expense of the tackler. As the first half was drawing to a close the ogres tries a spectacular move involving throwing the ball-carrying Snotling over the defensive line and into the touchdown area. However the instructions didn’t quite seem to reach the Ogre in question and he ended up throwing him off the side of the pitch instead where he was attacked by the Uncle’s supporters.

At half time there are more players down through knockout for the rats, but incredibly the Ogres have suffered more injuries.

At the start of the second half the ogres immediately injure one of the Uncle’s and straight away knock out another. The ball is turned over to the Ogres after a Skaven runner is left exposed after breaking clear, but not before withstanding a shove and injuring a downed snotling. Da Big Fellas then manage to charge the ball downfield and carry on in for a touchdown.
At the restart there are only 5 Skaven players left on the pitch but at the kick off there was a pitch invasion leaving downed players scattered across the pitch. The Uncle’s tried to capitalise on the weakened defence by making a run for the line but he is knocked out by a defender but gives as good as he gets and takes the defender out too.
The Skaven team next try to break down the left and take out a Snotling, but Da Big Fellas apothecary was on hand to heal him and was able to carry on. One of the Ogres then made a charge for the ball carrier but had to go for it in order to get close and ended up felling himself instead. The Uncle’s once again tried to capitalise on the space and were able to break down the left hand side of the pitch but were taken down at the last moment. A snotling then retrieved the ball and was taken down by the remaining Storm Vermin who managed to pick up the ball and make a lumbering charge for the line, however he stopped painfully short of the touchdown line and the support rat was taken out in trying to get to him. The Ogres then brought him down leaving just a solitary rat on the pitch, who, deciding that there was not enough time for Da Big Fellas to score, and not enough time for him to do anything instead attacked the nearest downed opponent as the final action of this bloody, but surprisingly deathless match.
The Skaven were very pleased with this result, despite losing the game as it is the first time in this league that Da Big Fellas have failed to kill any of their opposition.

The Special Uncles 0 – 1 Da Big Fellas

We have the first two teams to complete all their first leg games, Da Big Fellas and Mad Dogs & Deadmen. The table is still pretty mobile, with The Special Uncles' win taking them up two places while Da Big Fellas only trail the Volga Wolfbaggers on goal difference. The Darkhole Penetrators and Dubstep Demons have four games in hand though, so have the capacity to rocket up the league hindered only by I've A Horse Outside's strong position in third.

Man, this is awesome. Also: 5punkers in something resembling a tournament? With no ninja-concerts or other bumsilliness? A sure sign of the end times.

By the way, I think it would probably be an idea for only teams who have finished thier first round of matches to start playing in the second round of matches. Theres always going to be some disparity in the team values, but if I now play someone who still has a bunch of first round games to play, it may be too much of an artificial gap to be manageable.

I have a semi-ninja concert on the other side of the world within 2 weeks for an entire month, does that count? :P

Actually that's a point, might have to pull out of the league once I finish round 1 by playing Roman and S2B.
