I got the house late and it makes no real difference. You'll find free beds to sleep in and workbenches here and there. I've just wasted a few caps on paying for some heals, detox, etc. The facilities for your house aren't free to buy anyway, so it probably balances out.
I've been carrying around loads of stuff the whole time, most of the big guns, as it's my speciality. And explosions, I like explosions.
But keep all your ammo until you know you don't want to use it or it becomes redundant.
I've been sneaking round headshotting people with energy weapons - sneak criticals are awesome.
Also got the Grim Reaper sprint perk (refills all your actions points when you kill someone in VATS) in addition to Sniper (improved headshots) and that improved targetting one - meant I was able to obliterate a slaver camp of about 20 bad dudes in a minute whilst they all tried to swarm at me. It was fucking awesome.
nice spoiler blocking...was good to get some info without really seeing anything
although, my PC was fucked and I had to re-install XP...only had a few days in and was quite enjoying it...but, I had to play at minimum graphics so I was quite irritated not being to see it as it was meant to be played and I'm just gonna wait until I get a new graphics card or XBox it...btw...anyone playing it on Xbox?

couple of bits in there for getting it to run some graphics settings higher or lower than the minimum and max settings and some stuff for getting it to make better use of your ram if you have moar of it, also bits for making sure it does multithreading properly
i have to admit, i immediately took the bloody mess perk as soon as it became available, i didn't even look at the others.
now i find myself incredibly disappointed when i kill someone and he doesn't explode in a super gore-fest though. in fact, i think i've become addicted to blowing everyone's head off.

It's pretty gory anyway I've found. That reminds me of something I've noticed though; when you blow something's head (or other location really) to pieces, you can loot any little bit of it. So when you shoot something that's up on a bridge or balcony or whatever, if an eyeball or piece of skull lands on the ground you can wander over and loot the corpse from that little part. Useful, but a little immersion killing for me.
That's one of the best bits about it! Remember spending hours in Oblivion trying to find a weapon after I used an explody sword of massive damageness, whereas in Fallout, doesn't matter if the weapon pings off a cliff (or into a river) it is still on the body when you loot it.

Indeed, I really like the feature and am willing to sacrifice a little bit of immersion because it makes it so easy. The opposite, where you're scrabbling around a pile of bodies trying to get the cursor positioned just right to search only corpse you haven't already done is even worse, as you start to curse the deficiencies of the game engine.
It did catch me a out a few times at first, where I would hunt around for the weapon I'm sure I saw over there, but it's quick and efficient and you can get right on with the game.
if you could pick up or drag corpses it wouldn't be so bad but there were many times where bodies were piled on top of each other and it took ages to loot all of them.

...but you can pick up corpses, with the z button.
[insert obligatory BF2 map background comment]
I've remapped the z key, but I do remember a grab command, as when starting the game I resolved to carry my teddy bear everywhere with me, unfortunately it was cruelly taken from me in the time between my first steps and my crappy birthday party. But I forgot about it and haven't used it since.
I too took Bloody Mess as soon as it became available - it was only afterwards I realised it also did additional damage. The squelching sound that is made when you blast someones noggin off is most pleasing.

Use a minigun. Seriously, just do it and observe the body of the supermutant.
