Also, if you can find a load of people interested, make some noise to websites like adslguide and cableforum.com

Both sites have people from ISPs reading them often, I suspect making a big, public fuss will help motivate people to give you internets

Yeah, I'm sure we can all pretend to live round there and make some noise to support you too. :)

Yep. Apparently the exchange has a limited amount of copper, so a few people can get a crap 1mb connection. But not me. BT have put another order in for the 24th, but I'm not holding any hope. I'll keep putting the order in though in the hope I'll get a line eventually. In the meantime I'll go to 56k.

My parents were on dialup until about 9 months ago, and it maxed out at a blistering 18k I think. That, combined with an ancient PC with 64megs of RAM, screen resolution of 600x400 and windows 98 made browsing a thoroughly agonising experience.

Well, as Eion said ages ago, it's better than nothing (or £30 worth of phone bill for mobile browsing). I don't know how dialup works any more though. Do I still have to pay for the call? That's not very cost efficient if I do, yet another reason I'd rather be on broadband.

Depends, we used to have a monthly sub and all use was free, then I went to pay as you go (Paying for call) when I first got broadband as it went down quite often and I had it as a backup

ISTR that my parents paid according to time spent online rather than the amount of data transferred, whereas my mobile charges according the data volume, and I get a 1MB allowance a month in my contract. Either way, it's not great. I remember playing plenty of Delta horse over dialup without any problems, but not sure how well Beef would cope...

I think it goes without saying that I'll not be gaming, unless anyone fancies some Laser Squad Nemesis. Still, I ordered Bioshock today so that'll keep me going for a bit (as long as you don't need a connection to install it). Hopefully it's only a temporary measure until I get a real connection, and I'm sure BT will be nice enough to not tie me to a contract seeing as it's their fault.

Here is some infos on 3G stuff:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/08/20 ... ata_plans/
£10pm for 1GB of data, speeds vary depending on reception, I guess, but is somewhere between 1-11Mbps IIRC.

Not as pricey as I had imagined, but then you still need a 3G phone and contract of some sort.

Heh, I think I have it at my parents' house. Maybe we can run a community outreach program for me and play games from ten years ago that I can join in with. We might even attract new members from other places without broadband, like deep in the Amazon and on the moon.

Pffffft, I'm definitely up for some classic DF2 action. A snailmail version can easily be arranged if you want. I was in the empoverished land of Ireland last week, and even the villages there have broadband now!

Am I likely to have any luck with an LLU provider? Just a thought.

I doubt that you're going to find an LLU provider willing to provide service if even BT won't do it.

I was expecting that. It's odd though, because BT must know how many people live here as they supply the phone lines. It's not like I live in a cottage in the moors - there's hundreds of houses here, let alone the single guys in the blocks. I really can't understand it.

It might be a problem with the exchange - if the exchange is small or in a poor location, that could make the whole thing uneconomical.

Or maybe it's because hardly anyone oop north has a computer.

Don't know. A few people here can get a 1mb connection, and the business side of things here has a decent speed, but I don't know how this affects me. I'm hoping that if I pester them enough I'll manage to bag one of the 1mb ones, because I'm loathe to spend £25 on a 56k modem. I might have to though.
