That was very effective, a little easier than I was expecting.

I've done some stuff:
- Added a list of commands to
Tips & Info thread. I've highlighted the most useful ones.
- Everyone who plays should be an Op and have access to all the commands. If you're not an Op let me know. Or shout in-game and someone can "op [playername]" you.
- Most importantly I've added a mapping feature here*. There's even a day and night switch so it's easier to spot torches and so where buildings are.
*NoScript addon gets in the way, but it is safe as far as I know.

That's rather cool. Sorry about the large swathe of burning trees in the middle. How do you switch to night mode?

+ button at top right.
It's cool indeed. I think the large expanse to the bottom right was me wandering aimlessly.

Getting increasingly tempted to join in the multiplayer fun. I reckon i'll wait until the nether is working properly in MP.

The map is set to update each night, in the early hours to minimise impact on the Minecraft server performance. I may add some other features later on, like some kind of status page and regular backups, just in case.
It is actually possible to have The Nether on multiplayer, but you can't move between normal and The Nether via a portal. The server has a Hell switch to turn the world from normal to Nether mode. Both modes share the same world files, for the moment at least. So if you have a current normal world and you restart with the Hell switch enabled the sky will be red but the landscape will unchanged from normal. If you go wandering off into previously unexplored (and ungenerated) areas the newly generated landscape will be the Nether. The transition between the two types of landscape won't be smooth, you'll see sky high cliffs of Hell rock. So by switching the Hell mode on and off while wandering and restarting the server you can end up with a mix of normal and Nether landscapes. It's quite an impressive sight.
Mobs still don't work properly in Nether MP.

Server updated
Minecraft Alpha v1.2.2, Minecraft Server 0.2.4
A whole pile of bug fixes in this one. There’s still a lot more to do, coming over the next couple of weeks or so.
General fixes:
* players and mobs in lava or fire no longer spam sound effects
* getting hit with a higher damage while recovering from a smaller one now works as intended
* lava flows further in the Nether
* zombie pigs eventually forgives
* added support for custom skin packs
* fixed duplicate buttons when resizing screens
* zombie pigs and ghasts no longer get hurt by fire or lava
* fixed volume sliders now saving properly
Multiplayer fixes:
* hellworld=true no longer overwrites old save chunks. Player positions will still break if you switch it on a running server, though
* boats are now visible to other players
* minecarts move nicer
* fishing kinda sorta works, but needs more work
* sheep and cows look like sheep and cows now
* buckets work now
* fixed stairs being really difficult to destroy
* increased the timeout before “Took too long to log in”
* made it possible to ride carts and boats
* added (after lots of work) the ability to steer server-side boats
* added “no-animals” setting. if true, animals will immediately vanish
* added support for more animation settings. Currently it’s just the “riding” animation, but the same system will be used for sneaking
To make a texture pack, make a zip file that contains the files you wish to replace, then place that zip file in the texture pack folder. There’s a handy button ingame to open that folder immediately.
If you place a “pack.png” file in the root of the zip file, it’ll show up as a preview icon. Please make sure it’s square, and of an even 2^x size. For example, 128x128 pixels.
If you place a “pack.txt” file in the root of the zip file, the first two lines will show up as a description for the texture pack.
Perhaps it's time to try texture packs now there's better support.

A poll -
http://polldaddy.com/poll/4069007/
I went for health as I that'd make the game immediately more enjoyable, I think. I can put up with inventory bugs for now.

Assuming they're both coming, I voted for health too. SMP isn't scary. I want to go on terrifying exploration team adventures and fortress defending.
You link goes to the results page through spoodie- hopefully that won't stop people being able to vote.

Link fixed, I hope.
I've pulled this list of known problems from a whiny thread on the official forums. I've experienced all of these bugs and it's reassuring they're known about and not unique to our server.
Blocks re-appearing after being destroyed.
Increased world loading lag (which was previously fixed in the last update, but now broken again)
World does not render when traveling in a boat, which is why you can reach the edge and crash the game.
When you log out in a boat/minecart, there is a duplicate of you in it when you come back.
Unexplainable delay movement while traveling in a boat.

I'm sure it's very impressive, if you understand it. Personally my knowledge of computing doesn't extend down to this level.

Might want to password the sever. Had a random join tonight, dont think he did any griefing, just asked about sever memory leak or something. Thinking it might be a good idea just in case we do get some nob on who decides to trash everything.

Sounded harmless enough. Unfortunately there's no password option on the server by default, I'd have to use an admin tool. I'll look at them again over the weekend.
And I do reset the server every day or so, just to keep things tidy.

Can you set specific spawn points for people? (ops and others) so anyone who isn't an 5punker gets popped into an unbreakable cage until we're happy they can be let out and everyone who is gets spawned next to the cage?

Sounds complicated but I'd imagine do-able. However I don't fancy working out how. An easier option would be to ban anyone not on a whitelist, which is a common feature on the server admin tools. So unless anyone has an objection?
Anyone not on the list?
