Xbox games are extremely easy to sweep, and there are tonnes of them, so I'd suggest chipping, and installing a hard drive, and turn it into a "media centre" as well.

Pretty sure Bobbins is a fountain of knowledge with the chipped Xbox software, along with a few others here.

I do have one but Prof is the man, I'm sure he posted a good guide on this when 5punk was a wee baby.

I'll have a search...

Interesting. Now I'm getting a 360 I could just chip up my old Xbox as a media centre instead. Can it handle HD resolution videos?

I watch the ~700mb versions of TV shows and they look great, as for proper HD, dunno, but as you are restricted to normal res TV outputs I don't see the point

That'll do me, thanks. It's certainly more convenient than hooking up my work laptop to the TV or trying to get things to run on my P.O.S. KiSS Divx player.

WHIN!

First gaming session was 2 hours of Gear of War coop with a mate over the internet. Great game, comparable to the experience of first playing Halo back in the day. Very nice looking, plays well and different enough from standard shooters to make it a very good game. So far I'm very happy with my purchase. :likesitall:

So have we established whether or not you can use a 360 to stream swept up videos yet? Im kinda hoping you can, as its one of the main reasons im getting increasingly tempted to get one.

Unfortunately the required WMP 11 wants to run Genuine Advantage to check you have a valid Windows installation before installing itself, that's as far as I got. Maybe I could try it from my work laptop.

So wait, if you have WMP11 working ok you can stream stuff? Because i have that. Its floored windows, but the verificationising isnt a problem.

I'm trying to find out elsewhere, I will let you know for certain, hopefully.

I got video streaming working but it's far from ideal.

This software allows you to serve files over the network without using official MS software, works well enough: http://www.orb.com/

But getting files into the correct format and screen size is the tricky part, much like with the PSP. I tried this: http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/Xbox360/
But it's basic and riddled with adverts. You need a decent converter which allows you to manage the screen aspect properly or get hold of files which are already prepared for the 360.

I haven't given up though, more later perhaps.

Depending what format you need to transcode into, you might wanna look at vdub or vdubmod, it has a built in resize function (Video>Filters>Resize)

Doesn't support some encoders, but does work with most.

I have had similar problems.. especially with DIVX movies.. have to convert to wmv or avi for it to work and even then its hit or miss.

If you do find something please let us know, as it took ages for me convert one movie to find it didn't work :(

Okay, time to get one. Obviously the hard disky version, don't want bundled games I won't play - games that I'd get right off probably be Forza (duh), Gears, Pinata and probably some other driving games. I have a normal telly for now, although I don't know how hard connecting it to a montor would be.

So, anyone seen any good deals recently?

If you get the Elite, you can presumably plug it into a monitor over DVI using an HDMI-to-DVI converter (but don't quote me on that - or do, see if I care). Otherwise, there's a VGA/d-sub cable you can get for it that'll do the job in an analogue way.
