I played it for 20 mins on the tutorial and it felt like it was struggling a bit when anything had to move. Might knock the settings down a notch or 3 and give it another whirl when I have the time.

Floor = fail, so I've ordered this off Play instead. Should arrive around the same time as Stalker, so Mrs Pants may kill me.

I started dabbling on the first mission last night too. I'm quite happily plodding through it, and the only time I had performance issues is when it zoomed right in on the first enemy base exploding. I'm quite enjoying it so far, but it's only a matter of time until I reach a defender mission and get stuck.

Noooo that's a good thing!, you're supposed to place them next to each other it gives some kind of bonus,

There are several combinations, like placing mass storage nest to mass extractors, and mass febricators next to power generators.

There are loads of compliacted bonuses that I don't understand

Grid bonuses (as I call em in my head) seem to work thusly:
Stick a powerplant next to any building (and it needs to be fully next to a building, having one side of a power plant split over two buildings doesn't work, unless you can fit both buildings onto that one side) to reduce the power cost.
Stick a mass extractor or mass fabricator next to a factory and it'll reduce the mass requirements of whatever you build in the factory
Stick factories of the same type next to each other and the build time goes down
Put the relevant storage types (mass or power) next to their relveant building and your power/mass a second increases.

From experimenting, I think you get the best bonuses ignoring the ability to reduce build costs, running costs etc and simply building T3 mass fabricators and T3 powerplants on their own, then surrounding them with storage things.
