It's worth checking out if you can and you should play it in one sitting. It's less than 2 hours, even if you take some time to look around and soak up the atmosphere. Unlike some other "art" games (Dear Esther) it's got real gameplay, but also doesn't go to the other extreme of being mental hard or obscure, like Braid or Fez. It's just a nice Journey, which should be memorable and affecting. Especially if you meet people and share the discovery and trials.

No game this year has made me feel like I really wanted more after it had finished. Dishonored was original and I really enjoyed playing it but it was lacking a "U", was too short and the finale was a bit "is that it?!"
Borderlands 2 was more of Borderlands and didn't bring much new.
Looking through my list of games on steam the two most played games this year have been Guild Wars 2 and Planetside 2 and XCOM lags in 3rd.

+1 for XCOM I guess
