5punk Award (Om)Nominations - SP Game of the Year
Post here to suggest entries for the 5punky Single Player Game of the Year. Nominees will be games which have proven to be most counterproductive to un-5punky pursuits such as romance, family and career. Votes will be placed in the new year.

Ooh, FTL is a good call. Very addictive for quite a simple game.
Dishonored. Not played this either but I'm looking to find the time.
Hitman, slow, considered and beautiful. Or you can go batshit crazy and slaughter everyone, that's beautiful too!

The Walking Dead and XCOM - Enemy Unknown are my nominations for this category. Borderlands 2 is probably more considered a co-op game so I won't nominate it here.
Re: 5punk Award (Om)Nominations - SP Game of the Year
I think that rather than my previous statement made earlier in the year that I've lost interest in multi-platform releases, that I've actually just lost much of my interest in Single Player games. Shooters particularly, although it may be related to the multi-platform thing as certain game mechanics and UI decisions I find very offputting.
FTL is a great SP game, but maybe too little variety to make my GotY.
Hotline Miami is similarly slick but limited in scope.
Legend of Grimrock was exciting for a while, but my interest suddenly dropped off (possibly as a result of some other game stealing my attention.
Saint's Row 3 was fun, but not GotY fun (and possibly 2011, although I bought it in 2012).
Towns is a strong contender, but isn't technically released yet.
Wargame: European Escalation had a lot of potential but as with Grimrock I got distracted and never went back.
Warlock certainly deserves a mention in my list of favourites this year.
And of course XCOM has proven to be a great game, although I've kind of strayed from it too in the face of some great MP games.
There's not a lot between these games for me, and my instinct is to agree with XCOM, Looking at the times played (in Valve time admittedly), three stand out as being well in front, and two - FTL and XCOM - have already been nominated. So my nomination is Warlock: Master of the Arcane. It may appear to be Civ-light, it might be something of a one-trick pony, but there's something so compelling about conquering a world city by city.

I was going to nominate Skyrim but then realised it's been out over a year, AND I'M STILL PLAYING IT.
Help me.
I also nominate Legend of Grimrock
(Which I would have finished if it weren't for Skyrim, but than can be applied to most things in my life now)

Yeah, I'm still kinda immersed in Skyrim.
Do mods count as games? I really loved Black Mesa Source (or what they've released anyway), it was like Half Life but betterer, lots of polish and finishing touches.
I would have nominated Dungeons of Dreadmor, but it's a 2011 title. The DLC this year's been great (and cheap!).
Sniper Elite V2 with its skull-exploding camera was pretty awesome.

I love Dungeons of Dredmor. I just ventured into Diggle Hell and was promptly utterly destroyed by Vlad Diggula, who is more deadly than Lord Dredmor in my estimation. Such a great game.Grimmie wrote:Yeah, I'm still kinda immersed in Skyrim.

+1 for X-Com, it's really the only SP game I've put any time into that came out this year.

Hmm, I don't really remember many stand out games this year. Saints Row 3 was probably the most fun I've had, but as Doggers mentioned it doesn't feel like a game of the year. Dunno, I'll trawl through the library and see what jumps out.

Re: 5punk Award (Om)Nominations - SP Game of the Year
I too, don't get that obvious game of the year feeling with a lot of titles. Dishonored is a great game, but it's no Bioshock. I haven't even been moved to even buy many new titles this year, skipping most of the ones that end in three (Diablo, Far Cry, Mass Effect, Ass Creed).
The Witcher 2 in it's enchanced format was possibly countable and is appearing atop many console players' lists who only got to experience it from this year, but it's both a testament to the creators and a sad statement about how disappoint the many current "big-name" releases have been that Black Mesa is being seriously considered as a contender.
I've easily played Towns more than anything, though.

Diablo and mass effect were a bit underwhelming, so I'm going for towns as well. Pigpocalypse!

Good point, the enhanced edition with all new stuff and things. Plus it has an ever harder than normal setting. That from a game that I think most 5punkers agreed was fucking nails on easy. I'm spitting distance from the end but I'm gamed out right now. I'll get that shit finished though.FatherJack wrote:The Witcher 2
Re: 5punk Award (Om)Nominations - SP Game of the Year
That reminds me, the game I was playing up until it was wiped out by an update this summer had a townie die right at the beginning on his way to the island where I built my fort. Nobody went over that side of the river again and we left his corpse there. Eventually there were literally hundreds of ghosts there, screens full of them. I wish I'd taken a screenshot of it now.Mr. Johnson wrote:Pigpocalypse!

We should have a "Disappointment of the Year" - there was a lot of competition in 2012Mr. Johnson wrote:Diablo and mass effect were a bit underwhelming

After watching Total Biscuit's round-up I agree with his top game: Journey
Unfortunately it's a PS3 exclusive, but is easily the best gaming experience for me this year. Short but so much atmosphere and emotion. Also it looked amazing.
Second option would be FTL.
/edit
And The Walking Dead, even though I'm far from finished.

Re: 5punk Award (Om)Nominations - SP Game of the Year
It seems to have a lot of game journalists blabbing about it in florid terms and I'm sure I've heard it linked to the 'games as art' debate. Normally this would make me think 'it must be shit', but it looks like it warrants further investigation.spoodie wrote:After watching Total Biscuit's round-up I agree with his top game: Journey
