A bit of nerd porn/info that I read about. Apparently they used this cameras to film the show:

I thought the opening scene was probably the best. Back to the old Dwarf, but obviously that couldn't be sustained.

Ok, Ep 1 was brilliant compared to that.
I'm surprised that plot even made it into a script, let alone production and release, it was just terrible. It was a bit iffy in the first episode (mostly lack of funnies and lack of audience) but it did just go badly downhill.
I'll watch part 3, but I suspect it won't redeem it, which is a shame as you would have thought for the 20th anniversary they would have made something half decent to at least finish the series off on an ok note.
I'm hoping secretly there's a big Red Dwarf fan up high in the Beeb, who's pissed off with the way it's ending and will commission a new series to at least try and finish on a high, hopefully they could get Grant and Naylor to work on it.

Well, I liked it. I can't help feeling that some peoples expectations are set a little too high. Surely you've seen the latter series?

It was fairly bad I thought. Poor plot.

Kinda this and also it's been ages since they last got it together. (hur hur)
I am disappointed too though, their acting seems a bit weak and half arsed on occasion. Plus they're all fatties!

We might be misremembering.
Reading the books makes it all seem awesome, but IMO the series was always a bit craply-done. I rewatched some of the episodes after reading the books that contain the same stories and the acting, sets and effects never stand up to the book where you have their faces and voices playing out the scenes in your head as you read.
While the effects are better, barring a few 'looking the wrong way' moments from the actors, the level of funnyness is there with the later series - ie: not very.

True, but if people are to believed, this plot was laid down in 04/05. I'm shocked that no-one at Dave had gone "this isn't very good, do another plot".

The last episode proved almost no laughs for me, so it failed. I wish they'd concentrated more on the funny stuff and less on the convoluted, self-referential meta-plot.

yeah, it was awful. the first episode was decent, the second episode was funny at one point (the image enhancing bit), and the third episode was just pointless.

Ep1: Not great, but acceptable enough as a late ep.
Ep2: A couple of amusing moments, but mostly fail.
Ep3: A few amusing moments at the start.
Summary: 2 decent episodes and one filler, I liked the story even if it was a bit of a rehash of an old one, if they'd managed to get it into 2 episodes, it'd've been better, I think
It'd've been stupid to expect another ep on the level of, say, gunmen of the apocalypse, I didn't expect much from reading this thread, so was pleasantly surprised.

Oddly enough after the first one they played Gunmen, which is generally thought to be one of the best episodes apparently, and then Quarantine, which was my personal favourite. I've only seen the first one so far, but I did like the opening scene with Lister walking past the windows.

The two main jokes, Breaking the fourth wall, and Blade Runner, and turned it into 3 episodes. I was disappointed.
Fatherjacks comments about the series always being crappily done, well that was part of its charm (budget, and constraints of doing it in front of a live studio audience) . But the laughs are there, and I can still have a chuckle even now - though I over watched them many, many years ago.
Looking at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Red_Dwarf_episodes I'm laughing just looking at the titles. Except when I get to Season 7 where they took out the audience, filmed it like proper film and where it promptly took a nosedive. Season 8 was also done like this, but IMHO it was a lot better than 7.
/offtopic - thread hijack
My favorite moments include:-
Queeg - Jape of the decade.
Backwards - Reversing the speech using an Amiga and finding out that I'm indeed a sad bastard.
Timeslides - Get out Rachel and the puncture repair kit - I am alive!
Whitehole - What is it?
Dimension Jump - Ace.
There's many more. What are your favorite dwarf moments?

Dr Landstrom from Quarantine
Rimmer's Quagaar
Queeg
Holly forgetting books. Might have been Queeg too.
Rimmer's PC activist and Duayne Dibly in Polymorph
Hell, I could probably come up with a dozen bits of every episode up to series 6.

I wonder if the recent character named Queeg in Sarah Connor Chronicles was a nod to Red Dwarf?

Better than life
never saw RD after series ... erm ... 6 according to wikipedia, which I recall was the break while Craig charles was being (/edit
falsely) done for stat-rape or somesuch, although I'm pretty sure I remember tikka to ride.
Saw another one a while later but didn't connect with it, can't remember which. Sounds like I wouldn't enjoy these last three so I'll give them a miss.
anyway, Better than life was my fave, can't believe there's no groin attachment for the Wii yet
edited coz the BB tags didn't work *shrug*
