I have a floorware version (somewhere) but was stumped today in my search for a patchable version.
Gamestation: not a sausage, not even second-hand
PC World: they had the Frozen Throne expansion for £7.99 but not the game, when I pointed out this was
utterly fucking useless I was offered World of Warcraft
Curry's: Didn't have any PC games. At all. Unless you count "edutainment".
Tesco: Had Warcraft II for £4.99
I expect going online will yield better results

@ play.com only £8
but I guess a floorware version will do for unofficial demoing purposes rather than waste your pennies on something you will not play for more than an hour. when I have proper networking back I will will join in with a "demo" version and see if I like

Well I'm going through a sort of phase of legally buying all the games I've played quite a lot, sort of a guilt-easing strategy after having a period of naughtyness a few years back when filesharing programs started sharing a lot more than MPEGs.
RTCW and Neverwinter Nights have been obtained, and (don't laugh) Restaurant Empire and The Suffering are on the to-do list, but I had forgotten about WC3 - "being crap and only being able to complete 2 levels" is not synonymous with "not spending very much time playing it"
Multiplayer and patch-ability aren't actually concerns, as I (IIRC) managed both with WC3 and NWN regardless or their "dustyness", although quite some effort was required.

Rah, I now have this! I look forward to being savagely bum raped by orcs.

Two things I have noticed about this game:
1) Some of the single player missions take the piss. You get hardly any time at all to build your base before it's getting pummelled.
2) Skirmish - wtf? Are they taking the piss too? Barely 5 minutes have passed before all my troops have been wiped out by suspiciously advanced enemy troops. OMG, comp hax!
It has however given me feelings of nostalgia for Red Alert. Now if only I could remember where I left the damn thing...

You are building too much base, AICMFP

This i agree on. The AI has its order of building things optimised to buggery, so it gets everything out super bloody quickly.
some small tips:
every race can use the goldmines optimally with 5 collectors. With undead and night elves thats simply because theres just 5 slots. With orcs and humans, if you need more than 5 to get a steady stream then your town hall has been placed too far away, and you are just wasting food. If you use more than 5 and you are really close, all it means is some of your collectors are standing about waiting to get in the gold mine.
The build order is vitally important for the early game. You need your hero out ASAP so he can go kill things and get XP. However, you dont want him to get killed by creep monsters, so he may need backup units. As a general rule though, you should be able to take on the creeps marked with a green blip using either a combat based hero (like the paladin or the demon hunter) or a couple of bog standard troops and a support based hero (like the wizard fella).
I find a build order along the lines of:
build a couple extra resource collectors
build one of whatever you use for food (cottage, burrow, moon-pool, ziggurat)
build altar.
by the time the altar and the food supply is built, you should have the resources to build a hero.
while the hero goes off to clobber/hit and run some easy creeps, build a basic troop building and a couple of basic troops

I have finally secured a copy, and am going to give it a go now.
IIRC my strategy used to be:
Make a soldier
Repeat x100
Send them all off to get killed
...
Repeat x100
Military genius, I'm not.
