I bought the full pack earlier today, none of the dos box games work They either run at a resolution that my monitor doesn't support or display some error that vanishes before I can read it.

I got around this for some of them using the doomsday engine but I still can't play Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, Spear of Destiny or Master Levels of Doom. Anyone figured out how to change the resolution or make them run windowed? or know of any replacement engines for them?

Most sensible way would probably be to get dosbox yourself and run the games using that.

You're not missing much:
- Commander Keen is pretty poor by today's standards of platformer.
- Wolfenstein and SoD are okayish, but better off playing Dooms due to the resolution and controls.
- Not played Master Levels yet.

Aha! if you quickly hit alt + enter just as it goes full screen it'll switch to windowed mode before it goes all crashy

Edit: and you're right, they're nothing special

Might grab them, even though I already have pretty much all of them (incl. boxed copies of Final and Ultimate Doom) so I can play them at work. This crappy machine might be just about able to run them, although I'll have to watch out for ones that use the PC speaker.

I've probably bought Doom about 10 times now, including on the 360 and GBA.

Working my way up to nightmare mode once again, hurray!

Steam adds another blob of win (for some people) with dawn of war and dark crusade.

I went for the Q3 Arena/Team Arena package in the end, and I remembered just how fucking awesome this game still is

P.S. Do you mean the one we played at the 1st LANarchy event? Think it was called freeze tag or something, where you had to unfreeze your team mates. It was very good from memory.

From what I can tell, Doom1-2, Wolf3D, SoD, Keen, Hexen and Heretic use normal DOSBox, but some have right-click options to use the classic key layout (arrow keys FTW).

Hexen2 uses glHexen and Quake has a right-click glQuake option.

It's possible to get Doom (at least) working with either WinDoom or glDoom, which makes mouse play possible and pretties things up. I might do a brief guide once I've tried all the combinations.

I've been playing Doom and Doom 2 with Doomsday Engine and it does all this. You just need to set your resolution, windowed or not, mouselook on and change your movement keys if you want. Works a treat and looks much better than standard.

Doesn't seem to like Final Doom though.
