I read some stuff on other forums about griefing and agreed with which most people were saying about it mostly that if you don't get upset about it, they've failed but also that people were largely disappointed that the griefers weren't a bit more creative - one guy really struck a chord with me though: he said he hated the idea of griefers and really hated it if he saw them doing it, but secretly and refreshingly honestly he admitted he absolutely loved repairing damage.

I've read about some pretty harmless griefing, such as covering everything in vines, redirecting redstone circuits to do completely useless stuff and writing profanities at the height limit of the map. At least that would be a bit of a laugh.

That's just not fun. Sure, they're resources I've gathered while making other things (well, except for the 7 diamonds I had from strip mining), but it's a royal pain in the arse to have go gather up all the basics again in decent quantites before you can do much.

I hadn't really got that far, so I guess I'm less bothered - if someone had griefed my smooth-stone cathedral with a companion cube relief on the wall I had on one of the old servers, which wrote my name in sunlight on the floor through complicated glass skylights and an internal wooden scaffold I wouldn't have been very keen to put the effort into rebuilding it and would probably have taken Dog Pants view that being there and doing it once was enough. I'd have probably repaired the Glasscock or patched up the Long Road though.

That's just me though, in the main I like making stuff because I like making stuff - if it gets broken, (since I usually built close to the spawn often happened by accident) the server crashes, or we switch to a new one I either liked fixing it, making it again or making something new. The overflow from someone's upstream water/lava excavations on a previous server gave me a great idea for a Galleria to view the not-entirely-natural phenominon which had made the few steps to my front door more than a little treacherous. That it wasn't in any way deliberate didn't make that much difference to me - I had lava instead of a front door: time to get creative.

I'm not advocating griefing and agree we should probably protect ourselves in future, and locking unwanted visitors in a bedrock cage certainly appeals to my sense of fun.

I suppose you could cheat the stuff back, but that's a bit rubbish. I was messing about with some mods in SP, some of which carried over to MP like a detect iron/diamond mod called EllianDetector. I wasn't really planning on using it, just curious to see how it worked, but did notice quite a large blob of diamond tantalisingly close to where someone had been strip-mining roughly under Johnson's Mountain retreat. Still pretty much cheating, but when someone's nicked/destroyed all the stuff you've collected it seems justified.

Or, when protected, we can rally round and build a depot of Stuff to get people up and running again. I'd enjoy doing that for its own sake.

I had a look earlier, while most of the structures are intact (barring the seadome) they fully ransacked the chests which is the worst part of it as I'd stored my character's inventory in them whilst strip mining.

I had an idea about an entry system last night. A stone room around the spawn, with walls as thick as we can be arsed making it, with a row of steel doors and a lever at either end. The outside lever opens the doors to let out people we want to give access, the inside lever activates a set of pistons in the floor which squish whoever's in the room. We could put a room on the outside with a bed in so people didn't respawn in there if they died. New people coming in would have to chip through the wall with their bare hands if they wanted to do any griefing, which I can't see many wanting to do, unless someone opened the doors for them. And of course we all get a laugh (including the griefers hopefully) when they accidentally squish themselves.
