I think it (Ichi the Killer) has a great story, the violence done by Ichi is quite lol-some as it's quite cartoonish, as is Jijii, but it's offset by the violence done by Kakihara - which definately isn't done for laughs, despite his Joker-ish appearance.

The story is about what's been done to Ichi, so the violence is justified, and it's the revelation of Ichi's story that I found massively more satisfying than the films actual ending.

Kind of twisted superhero vs. yazuka stuff, where both sides are rather more extreme than you might be used to seeing.

Also see, 'Sympathy for mr vengeance', 'Sympathy for lady vengeance', and 'old boy', 3 more great stories from that neck of the woods. All three are bloody good films that contain scenes of extreme violence (not as extreme as ichi though) but they fit, and they all have bloody good storylines.

From Snowblood Apple, my favourite review site for this sort of thing:

While Sympathy for Mr Vengeance was an eye-opening thriller in which your, um, sympathies for the protagonists shifted with astonishing regularity, leading you to question your own morality in places, and Oldboy was a taut revenge flick with an intriguing premise, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance wants to be arty and worthy, but disappears up its own arse before, ultimately, leaving us with a predictable plot and bollocksy conclusion whilst trying to prove its arthouse credentials.

I agree with that in part, I like the film, but less than the others, old boy being my favourite. But I put them all up there as Park intended them to go as a trilogy AND to work alone. Just watch old boy if your strapped for time, its the third, its the best.

I also highly recommend Audition and Visitor Q, by the same guy who did Ichi (Takashi Miike). Not quite the same level of violence as Ichi, but similar extreme weirdness.

Visitor Q is good.

mostly not too weird either. apart from that bit in the kitchen, oh, and the back garden.

the start is fairly fucked up too.

Other than that. not too bad.

Although that IS a good film, it's not the one I was going for.

Midgets...early 80's. Magic...use of a catapult in it. Always on around Christmas for some reason.

hmm...i do like dark and dreary medieval films...looks like something I would/should have seen...especially the drive by hanging...although, i dont recall one that misty or that muddy...
