Jesus Christ do we have to have every single topic that gets a reply moved into Gaming Chat? All it's doing is bringing topics that aren't all that important in to push out the topics that are actually important. I don't need a running news feed in gaming chat. can we change the criteria for moving topics over or just fucking leave them in the news section?

Kinda agree with Deject on this, there's so many rss feeds to this place the front page looks like a link site.

However, I also think deject is annoyed because sir trev has busted his post level with supreme ease.

Yeah, I agree that having the front page full of news feeds isn't a brilliant or accurate reflection of what is a pretty active site. Jack said in the past that news posts with replies should be moved, but I think I would possibly change that to those with 2 or more replies - the ones likely to start an actual discussion. Ones with just a comment on possibly don't merit moving, and do run the risk of flooding the other forums and mildly negating the purpose of the new feeds forum, especially now it's open to all.

The why would be because I asked for it to be so. Initially it was just a continuation of WEY's policy that anything with two replies got moved. Then I just extended it to one, as I thought everyone's opinion as valid as anyone else's.

Whether it's working or if it's too much, we can discuss. Should we go back to the somewhat arbitrary threshold of two replies, or - since we have more newsfeeds - increase it further?

I don't like that people's valued and interesting comments (and mine) get buried every time there's a new bunch of news, yet having a "replied to" news forum on it's own seems a bit of overkill.

I do try to only make miniscule changes, so as not to meddle with a working formula.

Well it doesn't help that I just don't care for the news feeds at all, but I can understand why they're there. it's just annoying to have the threads you're paying attention to all of the sudden be pushed to page 2 by a bunch of topics that aren't the least bit interesting.

I mean, some of the ones you did move just have a 5 word snarky reply in them from you FatherJack. I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but someone commenting

really shouldn't warrant moving it in my opinion.

I kinda agree, actually. I like the news stuff, but it is rather swamping parts of the forum.

Okays, I'll nominally set the threshold back to two replies, but leave it up to forum and site mods' discretion as to whether a move is warranted, as I admit I was kind of doing it automatically.

I've moved some of the offending topics back too, so hopefully recently-discussed topics will regain their prominence, and have reduced the number of posts collected from Kotaku, which was swamping us a little.

I'll also try and communicate a little more clearly, rather than falsely assume people know whether I'm being sarcastic or enthusiastic, as this topic has highlighted to me.

Yeah I agree. The news feeds also clog up the front page as well.. Is there anyway to prevent that?

My personal rules of thumb is at least two comments or if it's something I think the community would be really interested in or should know about. Finally if it's something that I really care about and think some others might also. Does this sound reasonable?

I've mentioned not having news on the frontpage but it's not as straight forward as just switching it off I understand. If someone out there knows how to make it happen and can tell us how that would be great.

it may not be completely removable. but would making the news forum visible only to registered members do the job?

it'd stop us looking like a news spammy site to people who are just looking.

I've set this now, I kinda thought it was like that anyway, but it wasn't.

That may be all we need, as it's mainly non-members we imagine looking at the main page - most regged users jump straight to the section they're interested in.

Most of the news posts getting 1 reply is FJ's 1 reply, not all of these get put into a forum though do they?!

They did, because I was a bit careless.
