IIRC, there was a 20GB PS3 in US and Japan which was never released in Europe, but our 60GB one had the Emotion chip (for PS2 games) removed. The new 80GB models also have no Emotion chip.
So, the introduction of an 80GB model makes sense more for 20GB-owning users, and offers little to 60GB-owning ones.
Since they have announced there won't be a price cut for 60GB PS3s in Europe, they'd have to charge even more for the 80GB one, which no-one would see as good value.
The 80GB model could also be seen as way to soften the blow of removing the Emotion chip - something which again, doesn't apply here.
Odd though in terms of manufacturing processes - I would have though it more cost-effective to have a single, standardised 80GB Emotion-less model worldwide.
Additionally, he may be publicly "asking" for a 120GB model, to more effectively compete with the 120GB 360 Elite, which we also haven't got yet.
