Well at least we've got Kylie for Christmas.
I dunno, while the last series wasn't the best, there's something about Doctor Who that makes me ignore who the actors are and concentrate on the characters, and Donna Noble wasn't a bad character.
I don't think I ever liked anything Billie Piper did previously, but the Rose Tyler character was one of my favourites. Likewise I choose not to watch any of Tate's allegedly unfunny shows - although I did see the cringeworthy special where our ex-PM displayed superior comic timing.
I may be alone, but I think she did okay in the Runaway Bride, and at least she's unlikely to simper along after the Doctor like Martha did. They could have done a lot more with Martha, as the brief scene where they ran through with bows and arrows promised, but they never quite got there.
The companion's main rôle has been at its most effective when they can teach the Doctor a thing or two, rather than just scream, which is why Romana, Leela and Ace top my list.
Donna, having turned him down once, has the makings of this, with some good scenes towards the end of the special, I can only hope they can avoid using that bloody catchphrase.

Ive got to agree with FJ on this one. I find Catherine Tate's "comedy" to be some of the most painfully annoying shit on television, but thought that her character in the christmas special was rather good. Better than Martha "Least convincing student doctor evar" Jones, who just consistently got on my tits.

Oh fuck no. I don't mind the assistant character being a bit shit, as they're only really a device to ping the Doctor off anyway, but everything Catherine Tate has ever done has made me want to smash my TV up. I don't care if she's a good actor outside of her painful attempts at comedy, I just can't stand to look at her. When a professional comedienne is out-funnied by an unpopular politician it has to be significant.

Martha to take time out for Torchwood
Kylie confirmed for Christmas Who
Tate takes to the TARDIS in 2008
Personally I didn't think Martha was great, but I kind of warmed to her towards the end of the series.
I think the whole Catherine Tate thing is a little unfair, as I couldn't see anything wrong with her performance in the special last year, and she certainly had more "character" than Martha does.
I think Martha playing sub plots in both Torchwood and Dr Who is a good idea.
I don't watch any Catherine Tate shows because they aren't funny, but acting in a TV series is a very different thing indeed, and I think you should all wait and give her a chance before writing off Doctor Who entirely.
David Tennant has stated he will be leaving at the end of the next series, along with the production crew, and I think it's a good idea, as it will help keep Doctor Who fresh, and not fall into the same old thing with the same old characters like it used to.

not this. She's a dull character, with dodgy lines, badly acted. Plus, she is the least convincing medical student EVAR.Woo Elephant Yeah wrote: I think Martha playing sub plots in both Torchwood and Dr Who is a good idea.
