The Prestige

Post by Lateralus »

Another film I saw recently was The Prestige. It is directed by Christopher Nolan who also did Memento and Batman Begins, and stars Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Michael Caine and Scarlett Johansson, and features David Bowie in a sort of cameo role alongside Andy Serkis.

The plot is centred around two Magicians in nineteenth century London and their professional and personal rivalry. They start off as assistants and head off to make their own names as magicians. However, in one trick while they are still working together Hugh Jackman's character's wife is killed and he holds Christian Bale's character responsible. This is the main source of their rivalry, and continues to fuel it throughout the film.

The film is pretty intense, and very gripping all the way to the end. Some people see the conclusion coming from a fair way off, but others remain in suspense until the last 5 minutes. Either way, it is still pretty enthralling, and the ending is not detracted from even if you do know what is coming. Overall, the film is very good in my opinion, and is currently sitting high in my list of favourites. I would heartily recommend it to anyone.

Another one I saw at the cinema - and enjoyed it rather a lot! I won't go in to too much detail for fear of giving anything away, but it's gripping, choc full of suspense, and has some fantastic acting.

I honestly think Christian Bale is one of the best actors this country* has produced in quiet a long time.

*yes, I know he's Welsh, I'm talking about the UK

hogwash! (whatever "hogwash" is)

I agree Christian Bale is one of the best actors atm...but, The Prestige was a bit long/slow and not as entertaining/interesting/complex as I thought it was going to be.

Good...but disappointing...

I'd have to watch it again for specifics as it wasn't quite memorable to me.

I have to say, I do agree slightly with this. It seems to change direction near the end in a way that doesn't really fit.
