Lackadaisical can also mean idle and disinterested - and I believe that to be appropriate when people write incorrectly despite knowing the correct way. I'm using it describe deliberate mistakes such as txt spk rather than accidents like typos.

I looked it up to double-check before using it.

Pffft.

I didn't see any deliberate mistakes in the previous few posts. :P

In addition, that usage definitely smells wrong to me.

This is in contrast to the odour of cooking bacon, which always smells right.

Punishment for using bad grammar, or pointing out others' use of bad grammar? :)

It may be a bit of a tenuous use of the word, but I'll defend its accuracy!

  • careless
Synonyms: absent-minded, abstracted, casual, cursory, disregardful, forgetful, hasty, heedless, improvident, imprudent, inaccurate, inadvertent, incautious, inconsiderate, indifferent, indiscreet, indolent, injudicious, irresponsible, lackadaisical, lax, loose, mindless, napping, negligent, nonchalant, oblivious, offhand, perfunctory, pococurante, reckless, regardless, remiss, slipshod, sloppy, thoughtless, uncircumspect, unconcerned, unguarded, unheeding, unmindful, unobservant, unreflective, unthinking
Antonyms: attentive, careful, cautious, concerned, prudent, thoughtful
Admittedly it's a rather figurative use of the word, implying that one is being inattentive to the point of clumsiness, rather than not caring.

Er...forget grammar nazi ranks, it's too damn difficult to keep score.

Well, I should be safe. I was arguing semantics, rather than grammar. ;)

I still think that the use of "lackadaisical" in that context is not quite right, but as I said, I'll let it pass.
"Careless" has more than one meaning - it can mean not taking care (i.e. giving insufficient thought to something), or it can mean not having a care (i.e. not worried about something). These meanings are quite different, and I would strongly argue that "lackadaisical" is a synonym for the latter meaning, but not the former meaning.

Seriously, I can be extremely pedantic when I want to be. :P

Given Lat's current state of health, I expect to see him standing on a soap box decrying the "oppression of the English pedantry".

Look at the Bugmenot website. 5punk had user login details on that site.
