Have a look for your bookmarks file in your Firefox profile.
On Windows Fista/XP/2000, the path to your profile is usually %AppData%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\, where xxxxxxxx is a random string of 8 characters. Just browse to C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ on Windows XP/2000 or C:\users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ on Windows Fista.
The bookmarks are saved in a file called bookmarks.html
It's stored as a standard webpage, so if it's there, you can open it in FF or IE.
I guess it's possible that a crash forced Firefox to create a new profile, but part a profile? Bizarre.
