Open steam, open the "Play Games" menu, double click "Source SDK" and let it install. Then, open it, choose a game at the bottom, select "Hammer Editor", and off you go*!

*Well, that's after the many headaches and tutorials before you can work out how to make a box.

www.hl2world.com has a good deal of tutorials, start with the basic rooms ones :D
