Project Bukkake

Post by Dr. kitteny berk »

Seeing as stuff seems to be mostly working now, i figured i might as well speak of this mysterious project.

As most of you know, i'm currently running and paying for (with the help of kind donations) a little counterstrike source server.
Mostly, the service has been ok, usable but nothing special (with occasional problems) I've decided to fix the problem, by buying and running a dedicated game server for 5punk.

This is good because it allows me to have full control over the server, with the ability to add and remove maps, change player limits, and basically do what the hell i like.

For a start, i intend to run a 20 player counterstrike source server (which will run open, apart from 5punk (scheduled) games) providing it handles that ok, i'll either try to find someone willing to rent another equal-ish server (to help cover hosting costs) or run another equal ish server of some kind for 5punk, possibly CoD/UO or UT04.

Unfortunately, this is gonna cost me a lot of money to keep running (like, £700/year) so if nothing else, i want you fuckers to enjoy it and get this place and the server, looking lively.

I assure you i will not argue if anyone wants to send me monies.

Okay, after reading this, I thought I had best keep you all up to date with something I've been thinking of doing for a while.

As you all know, I'm expecting a little elephant in August, and obviously I won't be able to spend as much time on here as I would like once the baby arrives.

I've decided that somebody else would need the ability to moderate the forum, and seeing as Berk has spent so much time/money on getting a server up together (and the fact I own his soul) I decided it should be him.

I hope you all think this is a good move for 5punk, as personally I've always liked forums where you see Admin's actively taking part in the community, and listening to everyone's suggestions, rather than just appearing when they feel like it, and never changing anything *cough* R *cough* O *cough* B

Sorry if I've gone a little off subjject here, but I felt it important to inform you all about the changes in the coming weeks

I'll still be back probably once or twice a week, but I won't be able to spend as much time as I currently do on 5punk

Weekly Tuesday night COD games will still live on though :D

As a sysadm I would like to know the technical details, out of curiosity, which service are you using now and what were you before? I assume you don't host the server on your own property, are you still going through another company but you get control of the whole server from OS up?

Currently, we're using galacticencounters.co.uk which was great to get started (and use lovely quad xeons, but shared between many, many servers)

Once project bukkake is up and running, it'll be on hosting arranged by bob^^ (from 4rthur) and i should have near full control.

specs on the box are pretty modest (still trying to get the connection specs finalised)

dell poweredge sc420
2.8 775 prescott jobbie
gig 'o ram ™ (will get upgraded again later if needed)
2k3 enterprise server (legit  )
inept admins

hehe.

modest little box really, but it'll hopefully allow us a couple of full time servers with decent playercounts.

Until you get a new President you are not allowed low pings, be greatful that it's not supersized.

Beside, you'll probably still kick my arse/ass anyway.

please note:

those who plan and complete an assasination or other removal of the US president will be purchased their very own server and a ping less than 10

It may be modest, but it's a real server. Now all it needs is a Dymo label with "bukkake" stamped into it.

this. I'd say with that box bandwidth is more of a concern anyways. That's why ADSL am teh suck from hosting... 128-512Kbps upstream is not enough!
