Code: Select all

Greetings soldiers,

We hope you all have had great winter holidays and wish you all the best for the new year!

As your soldier has rested and regained strength during Christmas, you will find that as of January 5 you will have additional away bonus, corresponding to a weeks rest. This means that you will have a score boost lasting for a few hours the next time that you play Battlefield 2142. The away bonus is added to all soldier accounts, independent of how much you have played the game during the holidays. Welcome back to the battlefield!

Don’t forget to tune in to the Battlefield Podcast for their Holiday editions, great stuff there!

This is controvertial, but I like it. The away bonus is present in a few games - futurebeef and CoH/CoV that I know of. The idea is that the games gauge how much experience/points/whatever you accrue on average in a given timescale and then give you a percentage of this when you are absent for the same timescale. This probably upsets those hardcore mmongs who see it as detracting from their hard work grinding by giving people who aren't as dedicated something for nothing, but personally I see it as a little incentive for those who don't have the time to devote half their lives to be anywhere near as good. I've not noticed any real effect from it, but as a psychological incentive to keep playing it's quite good. It'll always be difficult finding a balance between rewarding dedication and hard work and enjoying casual play without being griefed by nerds with social issues, but at least it's easier to swallow this way.

Seen it in MMOs, and is a clever strategy by the companies:

1. They can claim to be "helping" people, after that bloke died in an internet café. Being on constantly isn't required, indeed in some games you're penalised for it.

2. It's costs them nothing. Actually they save by you NOT playing, but still PAYING. (or coming back to view more adverts)

I still think it's good though, although it's hard to draw a line. Sometimes I want to take a few weeks off from a game, yet also I sometimes want to play right through the night. Eve's kind of got the balance right - when not on I still learn skills, but not (much) ISK.

i quite like the away points cos i will often not play for a week and then go back and play again.

thing is i think its a bit unfair giving everyone free points for the christmas week, cos you know some sad bastards still sat playing right through christmas day and boxing day

in fact i probably had a bit of a play that week even

plus all those who don't celebrate christmas anyway and would have just been going about their lives normally
