Protecting adults from children online

ImageThe year 2006 was full of politicians and special interests protecting children from the evils of gaming -- but what about protecting adults from the children of the internet? In this recording (absolutely, positively NSFW!) an apparent 11-year-old named Hobbs says some of the most funny/disturbing/cringe inducing things during a World of Warcraft raid. Your initial instinct will be to think it's all fake, but over the 52 minutes worth of audio the realization that it's all real starts to bubble up as a possibility. The adults find Hobbs amusing at the beginning, but the novelty wanes by the end with people saying they'll quit the guild if he joins.

It's moments like this where an age restricted guild might be in order, especially when they start messing with Hobbs and talk about sending the kid pornography. As gaming continues its demographic spread, what can adults do to protect themselves from dealing with children? Do you automatically leave a game on Xbox Live once you hear the shrill voice of a 10-year-old? Would you pay extra to have an "adults only" section on Xbox Live? Parents buy children their consoles, games and allow them to roam free on the internet; maybe it's time to protect adults who just want to have a good time.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Oh God, this :above: . Luckily we manage to avoid that particular issue 95% of the time.

Reminds me of something that happened to me recently actually; I have a random on xfire who says hello and occasionally chats to me. He's only 13, but he seems like a good kid so I haven't blocked him like I usually do with randoms. A couple of weeks back I had his mum messaging me trying to find out about his friends. After I explained the situation - that I wasn't his friend, that I was a 28 year old married man - she seemed okay, but still seemed to be of the impression that it was me contacting him despite my repeated assurances that it was the other way round. This bothers me, because it could quite easily have been misconstrued. Especially so with the tabloids ranting about internet paedophiles grooming kids over MSN.

THAT :above:

Not to mention the risks of having a kid get upset at someone on a site and just say "he groomed me"

Well, that could potentially be very, very bad for someone indeed.

That's the Internets for you, kids learning things that some would argue they shouldn't.

I love the fact he knows what a dildo is but still feels compelled to call it a "pee-pee"

I personally am amazed that the recording went on for almost an hour and not one person called him a cupcake!

The world's going soft I tell you!

It's of a reasonable volumn, but the stuff this kids says, for an 11 year old, just isn't right.

Had some kid calling everyone a nub in HL2DM once, no not noob, nub - he even spelt it out for us, so we could better understand him. Possibly even more annoying was the guy trying to correct him all the while. Not helped by the fact that everyone sounds like Stephen Hawking over the built-in voice function of HL2.

Obviously nub boy was camping the fuck out of the RL on Overwatch, and his 'nubs' were the spawners he was spamming. After I'd grenaded him 30 or so times and surfed a radiator onto his head it got a bit old, so I left.
