Im not sure whether to shout praises to the sky or to begin the wailing and rending of garments.
Firefly (the series that the film Serenity follows on from) is being turned into an MMO. Yay!
However, its being made by the Multiverse people. They aint MMO developers as such, they just make the tools to make MMO's, and they, in turn, are getting a dev team to actually make the game. This worries me, hard.
I haven't watched this yet, (downloaded but not watched) so I might get excited about this after watching the series and the film.
Then again, I have never enjoyed an MMO in my life, so maybe this is one to get into as I'd need to have an interest in the subject to start playing an MMO
I loved Firefly and the movie Serenity is also very good but I don't see how you can put what makes these good into an MMO. Visiting Jaynestown might be amusing for 2 seconds.
Still, playing as a Reaver might be fun, eating other players.
it could go either way, as you say it all depends on the Dev team. This has been shown by SOE and the Star wars glaxies, the origonal Dev team made a cracking game, then after they left when SOE wanted to go in a new direction the new Dev Team didn't exactly destroy the game and it was mostly the dissicions of SOE, but the game became a simplified half arsed version of its former self.
Firefly was one of the best sci-fi type shows I've ever watched. I have no idea at all why it was cancelled. Typical American TV companies flying in the face of popularity again.

Money.
Statistically, more people watch shit comedy than decent sci-fi. Largely because theres a large amount of the public who wont watch SciFi just because its SciFi, regardless of how good it is. The amount of people who have an inherant hatred of comedy, even shit american ones, is statistically lower. More people will watch Friends than Firefly, for example, so the networks can charge more to advertise during Friends than they can during Firefly. Add this to the fact that SciFi costs more to make than comedy (special effects and fancy sets cost a lot, whilst most sitcoms have one main set, and a couple of dead basic, easily altered alternative sets) and the networks make, in total, waaaay more profit from sitcoms than sci fi. Hence an unending tide of sitcom drivel and very few scifi shows that even make it to the end of their first series.

All I can forsee is a Magical Gaaay Fairy Land spinoff in this new mmo... Wild wild west shoot-em up stylee mission running for agents with a bit of flying in a spaceship to get across lands. I doubt it'd truly and effectively realise what could be quite a fun franchise. Expect one dimensional fun. (I hate agent running btw - there are such things in eve, but I've not done any in two years - I just like real player interaction, storyline and politics.)
I suspect you'll be correct. However, thier official line is that the slightly unusual choice of dev team is because they want something new and interesting, and (this is actually a quote from them): "Not just another World of Warcraft clone". Probably just PR bullshit, but I hope not.
I do think that one of the man reasons EVE is so good is the emphasis on player lead stuff. Theres no real reason other MMO's cant do the same thing, I think they are just scared to.
Firefly the TV series was so good it almost made me weep. Top notch writing and fantastic characters that were played just right. Along with Heroes it's one of the best TV shows I've seen in a very long time.
Not sure what to make of an MMO of it though
Would Reavers have a special "rape, eat, sew" attack do you think?
