My dad driving after a couple of drinks is not comparative to a boy racer driving after a piss up.

There is a middle ground here, it's not all black and white.

For a start I said that generally drunk drivers deserve to die horribly.

There really is no middle ground, it's a *REALLY FUCKING BAD IDEA* to drive while impaired in any way. Cars are fucking dangerous and should not be used by those unable to control them.

Also why the fuck does anyone need to drive while drunk? taxis exist, as do legs. If someone can't afford a taxi home once they're over the limit, they really shouldn't be drinking, should they?

I also like the really poor attempt at turning this against me, it's sweet, really.

He might not be as bad as a drunk boy racer, but if he's drunk he's still more likely to be a danger to himself, his passengers and other drivers than he would be sober. I don't think there really is a middle ground at all.

Also, all the best to Deject's Dad. Give him many werds on our behalf.

well there is, you see, the law is an artificial barrier, to protect everyone, but saying that all people that drink and drive aren't in control of their vehicle is naive. Although i certainly don't condone drinking and driving, this is more about who is dangerous

If it is just a couple of units then I believe this is legal and probably morally acceptable, anything more is reckless and selfish whichever way you look at it.

I agree with Berk (and I'm guessing the rest of the board here) that there is no place for drink driving whatsoever, and it's quite clear that anyone that does this has a lack of respect for other peoples safety.

Please don't turn this into anything personal, Sandwich, I don't really see Berk's post being a target at your dad specifically, more of a general statement that almost anyone here would hold.

At the same time, you obviously edited your post and thought better of it after posting, so lets just agree to disagree and move on.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion on things, and they have a right to freedom of speech, but it should always be used with an element of common sense and decency, and writing about how your dad often drinks and drives on a post talking about Dejects dad nearly dying as a result of someone elses stupidity isn't very clever.

Can we just move on please, as otherwise this is going to get blown out of all proportion unecessarily, as I'm sure Sandwich meant no offence by this towards Deject when posting this, and he obviously got the wrong end of the stick when replying to Berk's post.

Let's just say Werd to Dejects dad and leave it at that

Before we get all in a tangle again let me interject:

Sandwich said his Dad drives after a drink, not that he drives pissed. I'll have a beer, or two if I'm out for a long time, and then drive. I don't make a habit of it, but it is legal (in the UK) and as such is probably fairly safe in most cases. I'm assuming that's what Sandwich meant. I'm also assuming that Berk made his statement to defend his position when many would guiltily retract it in case of misunderstanding, in true Berk form.

Lets not get too personal guys, try to avoid reading too much into each other's statements. Personal arguments are in particular bad taste here where we're trying to offer sympathies to Deject and his family.

For the sake of argument, lets say that drink driving* is ALWAYS DANGEROUS.

However drinking a little and then driving when you're pretty sure you're safe and not over the limit is okay**

*Driving while over the limit of alcohol that our legal system has determined will impair mental and motor skills significantly enough to present a danger to yourself and others while in control of a motor vehicle

**I say safe and not over the limit because *BOTH* of these should be true, if you feel too hammered to drive even if you are under the limit, you're still dangerous,

we should also take into account perception problems when drunk (ie. thinking you're safe to drive (also thinking the 65 year old bairmaid is hot)) hence the over the limit bit.

is the reason I dont drink and drive *at all*. I find that, although I can drink a reasonably large amount before falling over/vomiting/trying to chat up inanimate objects, I only need a tiny amount (ie: less than a whole pint) to start being a bit wobbly. Also, being drunk (even a little bit) makes self analysis duibiously reliable. Frankly I feel that taking the chance that my microsecond of alcohol induced delay could cause an accident and possible death is not worth a quick pint.

I've not started driving yet (really damn soon..).. I've heard things about lowering the limit of drink-driving especially for under 24s.. to about zero. I think this is a brilliant idea.

Also, slightly unrelated, I often cycle home after getting thoroughly wankered.. is there anything at all illegal in this? I've always thought no. I know there is no way that it is safe, but I'm willing to take the risk.

And the most important thing of all is, Good luck to Deject's Dad. May his recovery be short and as painless as possible.

Also illegal for the same reasons as driving a car whilst drunk. You are on the road and not in full control.

Sec 30 RTA 88 for reference

" 30.—(1) A person who, when riding a cycle on a road or other public place, is unfit to ride through drink or drugs (that is to say, is under the influence of drink or a drug to such an extent as to be incapable of having proper control of the cycle) is guilty of an offence.

(2) In Scotland a constable may arrest without warrant a person committing an offence under this section.

(3) In this section "road" includes a bridleway."

Yes, it's illegal to cycle while over the limit. I have a mate who got lifted for it (amusing story, but I'll leave it for another time).

I also think it's a good idea to reduce the limit to 0. There's no temptation or risk of confusion then.
