3.00 Firmware has arrived

This firmware has been added to /downloads and features the following changes :

    * PLAYSTATION Network titles are now supported under [Game].
    * [Remote Play] has been added as a feature under [Network].
    * [Online Instruction Manuals] has been added as a feature under [Network].
    * Timed recording has been added as a feature under [RSS Channel].
    * A visual player has been added as a feature under [Music].
    * 3-speed fast forward and fast reverse has been added as a feature under [Music].
    * [Camera] has been added as a feature under [Photo].
    * [UMD Auto-Start] has been added as a feature in [System Settings] under [Settings].

Be warned though, with the recent exploit found in 2.80 and the ability to run homebrew, you may want to seriously consider whether you wish to update your PSP or not.

My own opinion, is that if you are on 2.81 or 2.82, you might as well, as the TIFF exploit used in 2.80 was patched on later releases, and now the only firmware hackers will be interested in after 2.80 is going to be 3.00.

The visualisations look really good, and the main reason for this update (amongst security) is the PS3 compatibility.

Sony orginally stated this was not the case, and users without PS3's would be able to make use of the service, but it seems they have back tracked, and are using it as a means on convincing more people with PSP's to buy a PS3.

Bastards. That makes the game prices even more rubbish. Unless you can rip your old PS1 games to the PS3 for PSP usage- that would impress me.

Interestingly just one day after releasing 3.00 firmware, Sony have released 3.01 due to a security hole in the firmware.

This is good, as it may mean that in the future people may be able to exploit 3.00, which will give you pretty much everything you need to play PSOne titles (still unconfirmed if you need a PS3 or not as Sony will not respond to questions asked from various gaming websites) along with the fantastic remote play option for the PS3.

So there you go, it looks like there's hope for those of you with firmware 2.91 or 2.82, as there may be a potential to run homebrew on a 3.00 system, and to be honest, if this is the case, I will upgrade my own psp to 3.00 as well.

P.S. Whilst chatting to Stoat last night, he asked how much PSOne titles will cost, and in the US they vary from $5.99 to $10.99 so I'm guessing they will all be around £5 over here in the U.K.

They seem to vary from 150MB to 500MB, so a high capacity memory stick will probably be needed.

Also, the Remote Play function looks awesome, as basically you can take over your PS3's browser and view photos/video/music all streaming across your wi-fi connection without any lag whatsoever. Clever stuff.

Shame the PS3 is almost impossible to get hold of, and costs a bloody fortune

Seeing as a quick check around the interweb shops shows the predicted price of the basic ps3 package above to be upwards of £350 (about $670), and that doesnt seem to include games or extra controllers or suchlike.

and as for the Sony Online stuff being free:

Sony is expected to charge for premium offerings, much like Microsoft charges a monthly subscription for some Xbox Live services.

So in other words:

X-Box Live : No more than $50 a year
PS3 online : Unspecified and potentially fucking huge amount.

Sony have not done themselves any favours in the marketing department, but what counts at the end of the day is how good the games are, and the "variety" of games is just as important.

If the price tag is too high, don't buy one, just wait till next Christmas when all the bugs are ironed out, and the price will undoubtedly drop.

Lets face it, Sony are cunts, but they are bloody clever at what they do, and have always charged a premium for their products because of this.
I don;t think Microsoft or Nintendo give 2 shits about the consumer either, they just don't seem to be as capable as Sony at putting their foot in it at every single given opportunity.

In all seriousness, and from the fairly unbiased view of someone who aint likely to buy either of them*, I think the market is fucked for sony. the way I see it, the majority of the console market is split into two camps: people who like serious games, and people who like to have silly fun. The wii has the silly fun pretty much entirelly to itself, and the 360 has been out so long that most of the serious console gamer market has gone that way. The only market share left for ps3 would seem to me to be the hardcore sony fans, who would buy the ps3 if it were a shiny brick with a fan cellotaped to the side, and all this is forgetting the possibility that the ps3 could be rather costly. Result of that is going to be lacklustre sales, which puts off games devs, which in turn results in lacklustre sales.

Just look at the original playstation. The reason that kicked nintendos ass is that although there were some really good nintendo games, there were fucking millions of less good, but still quite enjoyable games for the playstation. Which, in turn, meant more people made playstation games. This is, I think, going to be the same thing in reverse.

Just my opinion of course, and all conjecture. We shall see in time

It's not reflected in Sony's rather silly table (which hints the 360 is unplayable without the additional features which make it comparable to the PS3, and ignores the cost saving of buying the non-Core release) but the cost of "full" (albeit not directly PS3-comparable) functionality of the Wii could increase a bit.

It's probably still cheaper, but with extra Wiimotes (£30), Classic Controllers (£15), Nunchuks (£15), Points Cards for downloading the classic games (£15 for 2000pts) plus whatever online susbscriptions costs, as well as the "Cube Controller" (?) and dedicated Golf Controllers could knock the price up quite a bit, compared with £20-30 for an additional 360/PS3 controller.

Other than the EyeToy and the SingStar mic, whose prices were cleverly masked by packing them in with rather cheaply-made games, the other guys haven't really gone for gimmicky add-ons - the additional controller's probably all you'll ever need above the base releases of the other two, although any "downloading old games" service would require further investment.
