Newbie Mining Guide (Part 1)

Post by Elotane »

Greeting to all my fellow corp mates and our new members.

Below is a mining guide that I found to be very helpful. Hope after reading this you will be interested in becoming a miner for the corp.

Point 1: Mining is the bloodline that keeps the corp coffer filled with ISK from the minerals sold.

Point 2 :The minerals mined also provide the basic materials from which powerful ships and weapons of war are made to protect and expand the spirit of our great corp for all to see.

Conclusion: A miner plays a critical role in the corp, even he/she can’t fight very well. By supplying much need minerals and materials in times of war or crisis, a miner can turn the tide of battle.

1- Mining 101

I realized this guide didn’t appeal much to beginners, I thought writing a small section for those just starting might be in order. This is the beginner’s section; if you know how it works already you can jump to section 2 right away.

Where do I start ?

When you start you get very little capitol to start with, which means the beginning of your mining career will head off slowly. Is it imperative you get Mining IV as fast as possible, which will allow you to use Miners II, which are cheap and much better than the tech 1 versions.

First of all, get out of your Ibis of Doom™ as fast as possible. The best ships to start with as a newcomer are frigates. They’re cheap and fast and do the job well. Fortunately, some frigates have a bonus to mining. The Caldari Bantam is the most suggested ship, it has a nice cargo and and some bonus to mining. Fit two miners on there and you’re set to start what hopefully will be a healthy career.

Any mining techniques?

Yes, in fact. There is a widely used technique called jetcan mining. The process is quite simple: you mine until your cargo is full, then jettison the ore in a can, and keep filling this jettisoned can until it is full (27450m3) (cargo->can). This saves you the time you would need to travel from the belt to the station every time your cargo is full. Once your can is full, switch to a hauler and haul it all to the station (more details later). Simple as that and very efficient !

There is a risk that an ore thief will show up in your belt and steal your ore. In that case, you will get a 15 minutes timer. This is your window to shoot the thief down without any interference from Concord. You can also gang yourself with corpmates to make it easier to shoot him down.

Ok, I know how to mine and sell, but WHAT do I mine?

The current problem in Empire is that many, many belts are stripped. Since the introduction of Exhumer (T2 Barge) class ships, as well as the gang modules, stripping belts has never been easier. A good remedy to this problem is mine in systems where there are no stations. You will have to haul a little more (make instas to make the trips faster) but the roids will be bigger. Also important to know is that the lower the security status of the system is, the better the asteroids are. A full roid grid can be found here.

The basic types of ore are:
Veldspar
Scordite
Pyroxeres
Plagioclase
Omber

The most basic minerals refined from these ores are Tritanium, Pyerite and Mexallon. Those minerals are always needed so don’t be scared to mine as much as you can!

read this one and skimmed the 2nd one but i think you should slide a the ASTROGEOLOGY skill to the 2nd most important after miner II. reason being each lvl of astrogeology gives: Skill at analyzing the content of celestial objects with the intent of mining them. 5% bonus to mining turret yield per skill level.

in the beginning while they r in a frig or if they start off with frig 4 then they should get the cruiser of course (osprey) and get miner II's. refining should be one of the latter skills. i my self would not train refining until your in a barge and gonna work on T2 crystals/strips. reasons:
1) if your in a corp and there are others around like me we can refine the ore better than you can
2) refining does not add to the yield of ore you pull which in the beginning is the most important

overall i agree with 95% of what you said. just the order i disagree ;)
I'll read it over again later when i get off work and add any thing else or discuss to update

These are great guides, thanks for posting them.

The first would have stopped me making every mistake I made when I first tried mining, and the second answered every single question I had about mining. Great stuff.

I've done some rather amateurish mining in Hulm and hit upon an idea.

I dropped a Giant Secure Can (couldn't anchor as 1.0 space) thinking that ore thieves couldn't open it and went back to get my miner. Upon return, some git nicked the whole damn (empty) can, buggered off and logged. Wasn't logged as a theft or anything - how is that fair? Arses.

Not sure how the game mechanics work on this one - can he open it or use it himself, trash or reprocess it?

It should have been logged as a theft, but if you put a password on it he wouldn't be able to get the contents of it

Passwords only work on anchored GSC's. This one was floating free in space and got legitimately yoinked. It's his now to do with what he wants.
