Right, got some info now.

The poundhost datacentre took a lightning strike, they've been told to keep kit powered down until safe by the fire people.

Right, all should be well now.

Code: Select all

Dear Customer,

At 18:50 this evening, our old Maidenhead datacentre was struck by
lightning.

At the request of the Fire Service and Southern Electric, we
powered-down all (approximately 200) servers in the building.

We are currently awaiting approval from the Fire Service and Southern
Electric before powering-on these servers. We have been informed that
this should be in approximately one and a half hours.

Please note: The new BlueSquare datacentre was not affected by this.

We apologise for our support and phone systems being unavailable during
this time, which are now up and running, and we ask that you submit a
support ticket rather than telephoning or emailing direct - this ensures
that we can systematically work on each issue as they are raised, and
will ultimately result in a faster response and resolution.

We will be sending out a further announcement email once normal service
has resumed.

also, yay for mature and sensible adminning

you'd think they could build a datacenter that is unaffected by lightning strikes by now, considering a few lightning rods should take care of pretty much everything...

Yup, They've pretty much moved out of that datacentre (which, iirc was their first) so i suspect it's kinda lacking magical sciences.

Code: Select all

Dear Customer,

This announcement email is to inform you that service has been restored as at approximately 23:00, and all servers will be online shortly, if not already.

We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused by this issue, and we appreciate your patience and consideration during this time.

Below are further details, for your information:

The power was cut as an initial inspection saw smoke and a burning smell originating from one of our electricity ducts that runs underground. Although the power was on, the Fire Service and Southern Electric requested that we shut down everything in the building to allow them to check the structure of all primary power feeds and to run tests on the cables with sniffers, including generator feeds.

We have now discovered a damaged section of cable, and this has been replaced and power is now being supplied.

I would like to reiterate that this did not affect the new BlueSquare datacentre.

If you are unable to access your server(s), please submit a support ticket and a member of the team will assist you.
