I'm willing to bet the adverts are big and intrusive based soley on the fact that it's EA.

Im willing to bet that they wont be. Look at it this way:

1)It makes no difference to EA what the ads look like, as long as people give them money for it.

2)The only people who gain from the ads being huge and annoying (or too shiney, or whatever) would be the companies being advertised. They've never complained before, why would they now?

3)The company actually creating the adverts (IGA) have a policy of making the adverts fit seamlessly to the game, and a good reputation for managing that that they will want to uphold.

So if the ads are annoying, EA gain nothing, the companies being advertised act differently to before for no reason and IGA break from thier own policy and ruin their reputation. Not hugely likely.

Of course, I could be wrong. But I still think running about flailing our arms around yelling "OMGOMGOMGEAARETEHSUXXORZ!" is a bit of an extreme reaction, seing as everything beyond "theres adverts in it" is total speculation.

All that being said, you guys are still having a more moderate reaction than the freaks at Gamespot. "OMFG! I WIL NOT BE BUYING IT NOW! LOL!"

It seems the updated version (the one that was released for the open beta) added a good deal of billboards.

They're not gonna be subtle either (given they're fucking billboards)

Anyone who's actually played 2142 will know exactly how little billboards will fit into the atmosphere of the game.

not all of them are billboards, some are just to show how the game feels as it is. (and yes, you could argue that the mucky billboards look ok. However, they don't contain adverts yet, so we'll see)

Those billboards look okay to me. If they keep the textures and mattes then they should fit in okay and I still can't see them affecting my game. I suppose the subject of the advert might change my opinion a little - normal products like drinks, cars, electronics, bras (yeah, I wish) I would be fin with. Stuff like other games would be inappropriate and out of place, and adverts that are irritating on telly (like those fucking ambulance chasing compensation soliciters) would be equally irritating in-game. I'd be far more concerned about pop-up adverts in the browser or loading screens.

TO be quite honest, if that's the kind of thing we're looking at, I'll likely learn to block it without meaning to very quickly. It's hardly massivly invasive. More so when you consider that you'll actually be spending the time playing the game and worrying about X, Y or Z over going grrr, damn ea and their ads

If the adverts are bright and pretty, it'll really detract from the game, if they do the job right, it'll be fine.

I wonder.. let's say the company needs to change the advert that is being shown in the game.. does that mean you'll have to download a new version of the map, with only the billboards being patched everytime they need to be updated or are they dynamic and will change themselves in terms of, it's just a jpeg located on the advertie's server?

i actually had a picture in my mind of how they would look and i thought it would fit in stupendously well, this in comparason = fail

i was expecting electronic billboards where the picture is made up of small hexogons but large enough to notice thats what there made up of and bits missing, like corners and the sign flashing on and of and the picture changing every now and then

thats just my opinion though

The first game I remember having banner ads was Planetside. They only put them in the home bases, and it seemed to fit quite well. I doubt anyone with half a brain will be swayed by adverts for the likely sponsers anyway.

PS was also one of the first games to have the Nvidia 'The way it's meant to be played' start-up screen; this caused much more of a curfuffle amogst the community at the time, but it's almost accepted practice now.

As long as we don't start getting full-on ad-breaks in games, people will just become accustomed to the odd billboard and disregard them.

This is one of the reasons I think its a really bad idea, I never take notice of adverts on TV, I wont be looking at adverts in 2142 (if i even buy it, which i doubt) so theres not much point in putting them there in the first place other than to annoy people.

Adverts for things you didn't know existed, and might like if you play games are one thing, but adverts for things like sprite are another - they just try to smoosh an impression into your brain to brainwash you into making an unconscious buying decision when faced with a choice.

It's tempting to think that adverts only work on the stupid, and therefore advertisers must think you're stupid. I don't mind the odd advert, and if they're excessive I just shut them out - it was the godawful dreary, samey tracks in TM:N that pissed me off, not the nVidia signs everywhere.

I often see adverts for things and think "ooh, wantsies!", but if I ever filled out a questionnaire I'd probably change the "where did you hear about this product" to be less embarrassing.
