So are medpacks going to have "Elastoplast" written down the side of them then? Tesco Value guns before unlocks? Do both teams have to stop halfway through and eat Del Monté orange segments before swapping sides?

it's been done before (swat 4 did it certainly) but i suspect EA will do it well, and still rip their customers off.Lee wrote:LOL, I knew it was inevitable, trust EA to be the first to do it though.
not to mention, if i'm in the middle of a future fucking war, i do not want banner ads circa 2006 pissing me off.

Here's what I think is funny... They throw this advertisement crap in on the people playing the game, who paid $50 for the privelage of playing it in the first place. Knowing EA, they probably won't use this for any sort of improvements or upkeep, but just try to keep it as complete profit.
We're not far off from having to pay to play all games and still be bombarded by advertisements.

I bet it will happen with Consoles soon. Especially the PS3.Nickface wrote:Here's what I think is funny... Probably not much before EA actually did it, but if enough people filled out complaint forms against them? I don't know - they may be a toothless in this regard, or EA might have to allow UK users to opt out of ads.Dr. kitteny berk wrote:I'll have a tenner on "Fuck all"
Complaints against TV and poster ads *have* lead to the ads being pulled, but whether that was because of threatened legislation by the ASA or a fear of bad publicity is unknown. The figures from EA's finance office clearly outweigh any concerns their board may have about public opinion polls from their marketing department

meh.
Its been done in loads of games before. Both subtley (in game bilboards advertising real things rather than imaginary products) and less so (Sam Fisher chewing on airwaves before a mission, and the packet taking up more screen than him), and I can honestly say its never affected how much I enjoy the game in the slightest.
The fact that the game will probably be rushed, bug filled and followed by a shitload of overpriced expansion packs; that will piss me off.
The fact that the billboards may be advertising Coka Cola instead of Mother Bullshits Cock Pies? Couldnt really care less.

Fact is, it won't be subtle, war games should look shitty, but i suspect we'll have some level of atmosphere, ruined by an over polished advert because some company wants their logo to be visible, not burned off and full of bullet holes.Joose wrote:The fact that the billboards may be advertising Coka Cola instead of Mother Bullshits Cock Pies? EA will almost certainly have part of the EULA cover the adverts specifically.FatherJack wrote:Probably not much before EA actually did it, but if enough people filled out complaint forms against them? As such, if you install 2142, you agree to see the adverts.

I love it when people try to strenghten their arguments by saying "Fact is" when they really mean "In my opinion". Anyway...Dr. kitteny berk wrote: Fact is, it won't be subtle, war games should look shitty, but i suspect we'll have some level of atmosphere, ruined by an over polished advert because some company wants their logo to be visible, not burned off and full of bullet holes.
Fact is
Seems to me like a knee-jerk reaction of doomsaying to something that is really not a big deal. If, when it comes out, people are wailing and gnashing their teeth over monstrous adverts, I shall be utterly fucking astounded.

I'm pretty aware of adverts being used in games, though i've not played many of them (given they're generally not games i enjoy)Fact is, its been done in many games before, theres entire companies that specialise in In-game advertising, and yet some people posting here, whilst being fairly prolific gamers, seem to be totally unaware that its ever been thought of before. Cant be invading on our game experience too much. And if they have been doing it for ages, and its generally been quite subtle, why does the fact that EA are doing it mean its going to suddenly be horribly invasive?
However, in this case EA are notorious for being very profit driven and often do stupid shit for money rather than keeping players happy (see: booster packs)
I think people are mostly shocked at the fact EA are gonna do it, and most likely won't be putting the revenue into stuff for the community (like mods, free booster packs, etc. etc.)Seems to me like a knee-jerk reaction of doomsaying to something that is really not a big deal. Not to mention the battlefield series classically doesn't really have much space for adverts - just a few billboards etc
also, as i said above, I worry that the adverts will be over-polished
adverts are pretty viable in some games, given the right scenarios - sports games? fine, stuff like swat 4? seems good, any game in a current urban-ish setting? could work.
However, beef games are generally in the middle of nowhere and while there are some legit locations to place adverts, i'd be concerned that they'd add more places to put adverts in to increase their revenue, quite possibly fucking the feel of the game.

Anarchy Online did this in a big way half way through it's lifecycle, but then again, it's a free MMO, so people don't mind them making money out of it.
If it's subtle and doesn't detract from the game, I don't give a shit, but if it's in your face, it would annoy me the first time, then after a while you just live with it, in the same way you watch adverts on telly.

Can't say I've ever really noticed intrusive advertising. The Sam Fisher airwaves thing would have gripped my shit, but done properly I think advertising could add to the realism of a game by having real life products advertised in appropriate places. I don't know how it'll be done in the next beef, but I don't think adverts for Coke would be out of place in 2142 - I expect they'll still be around then assuming we're not all enslaved by cockroaches or something. EA may well be more concerned with profit than many games publishers (which is why they're as big as they are today), but if they've done it to the detriment of the game in BEEF then why do we play it several times a week? I think advertising would only put me off a game if the game was pretty average to begin with, and I'm not particularly worried that BEEF2142 will be spoilt by it.
