Nearly 2 hours of fucking about with BF2

Post by Woo Elephant Yeah »

It took me absolutely ages to eventually get BF2 to work properly (having problems connecting to account server), and when I finally get on, the server crashed

Managed to get around the account server problem by launching BF2 from the DVD, and not the desktop icon.

Kept getting stuck, as in the afternoon I played a round and was promoted to Lance Corporal, and even if I finally connected after 5-10 mins, it would then freeze on the promotion screen.

Just thought I'd let you know of this workaround incase it happens to you tonight.
Also, Fear mentioned something about deleting some history out of a file in the My Documents folder to connect quicker, but I didn't write it down.

I had mucho gheyness with Beef yesterday as well, though I suspect it isn't a problem with Beef, I think my DVD drive has issues.

From OcUK:

Initially, I put it down to 'one of those things', but the problem has reocurred recently forcing me to take it as a problem that needs to be sorted: sometimes it it just refuses to read DVD's.

I have tried to recreate the failure, and the only common thread I can find is that, after playing a CD based game for any extended period, it seems to key a DVD, but is unable to run it, however; should I run a DVD based game for a while, the reverse is not true.
I am on the latest firmware but I can't for the life of me work out what the hell is wrong.

And with regard to deleting stuff from My Docs, I believe you can empty the 'LogoCache' to clear out all the server logos that Beef seems to insist on saving.

Edit:

Code: Select all

My documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\0001\General.con
with notepad.

Towards the bottom you'll find something that looks like

Code: Select all

GeneralSettings.addServerHistory "81.19.208.85" 29900 "5punk.co.uk - Get some on you!" 654
GeneralSettings.addServerHistory "82.192.78.146" 29900 "AcF][ www.AcF-Clan.NL | GameServers.net" 2
GeneralSettings.addServerHistory "82.192.78.146" 29905 "EA DE -=Fightclub Holzminden=-" 191
GeneralSettings.addServerHistory "85.236.101.26" 16665 "FMJS Wake Island + Urban's + Guest" 43
GeneralSettings.addServerHistory "85.236.102.6" 16665 "EA UK BF2 Official #20 (UK-Only)" 4
GeneralSettings.addServerHistory "85.236.102.6" 16765 "EA UK BF2 Official #14 (UK-Only)" 27
Then just delete the lines you don't want so you have something more like

Code: Select all

GeneralSettings.addServerHistory "81.19.208.85" 29900 "5punk.co.uk - Get some on you!" 654
GeneralSettings.addServerHistory "85.236.101.26" 16665 "FMJS Wake Island + Urban's + Guest" 43
Basically, beef stores the most recent 20 servers or so in your faves, then insists on pinging every single one of them, can make the startup take forever.

also mount this with daemon tools - it's a mini image to workaround any drive issues :)

:above: Dr. kitteny berk, yeah that's what I was on about with Woo Elephant Yeah

Being sad and everything I might packet capture the 'account sign on' bit to see what it is actually doing. I had one over 5 minutes the other day. I can't even imagine why it would take that long. Worst coding ever. Shitty EA :shakefist:

Cheers Berk, but I'd rather not have all that adware crap that comes with Daemon Tools.

And it's not just Beef that doesn't work, it's any DVD, so I need to find the root of the problem or I will have to RMA the drive.

so choose not to install the adware, or use the previous version of daemon tools?

You can't install the xp64 version without the adware, and the earlier versions don't work on xp64 (my OS).

Besides, I don't like having Daemon Tools et al on my puter, I just don't trust them.
