safe mode virus/spyware scan for a start.

then start > run > msconfig - disable anything that looks iffy.

also make sure that there's over a gig of HD space on the windows drive.

Could be a corrupt Reg entry, had that before but luckily I had a back up of complete Partition to replace it with. :)

Try using some of tools mentioned in my post here http://www.5punk.co.uk/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=884

NOTE : Windows AntiSpyware Beta has been replaced by Windows BitDefender

Try grabbing the latest version of memtest (you can create a bootable CD from it) and run that over it. Otherwise my hard drives have been suffering horribly in the heat lately (so much so I think its time to replace them, they weren't happy before, but the tempratures they've been enduring have exacerbated things (Thank you for the word Shaun)

Grab the memtest thingumbob here

Basically what berk said. With MSCONFIG, try diagnostic first, then Selective enabling each option in turn and rebooting until it fucks up. Then go into the problematic section (most likely Services if it's occuring before login) and enable them a few at a time until you isolate the problem.

Would Event Viewer be any use here? It's has been a long time since I did any admin stuff and my memory is slightly rusty.

It might help determine what has gone wrong and possible causes.

it can be, but then again, it'll often not tell much.

it's also something i automatically check when the shit hits the fan, so i don't think of telling people.
