What games need a sequel?

Post by FatherJack »

Reading this:
http://www.firingsquad.com/features/sho ... d_sequels/
article about shooters and this:
http://www.firingsquad.com/features/mor ... d_sequels/
which includes other genres, I was wondering if anyone could think of any others? I think they've got most of the good ones covered (as they discount stuff that's supposedly been in development or had a recent sequel)

There are a few I would love to see in there, particularly NOLF and Carmageddon. I enjoyed Blood II despite the bugs (both the computer bugs and the horrid in-game ones) and there was a 3-shot gun in Kingpin I always enjoyed using. I don't think I've played a single one of the RTS's.

For info the games they list are:
Alien vs. Predator, Soldier of Fortune, Hexen/Heretic, Blood, Shogo, No-one Lives Forever, Delta horse, Redneck Rampage, Kingpin, Dark horses/Jedi Knight, Red Faction, Rise of the Triad, Outlaws and Requiem: Avenging Angel
then
Starcraft, Command and Conquer: Red Alert, Homeworld, Wing Commander, Freespace, Interstate '76, Carmageddon, Clive Barker's Undying, Giants: Citizen Kabuto, Psi-Ops, Crimson Skies, Mechwarrior, Earthsiege/Starsiege, Ultima Online

I thought he was listing games that shouldn't have had sequels, I can think of lots if that's the aim. In fact because sequels are often not as good or far worse than the original I find it hard to think of ones that I would like to see.

Freelancer? Maybe, if they made space a little more...big, sorted the shitty voice acting, gave you more options on stuff to bolt on to your ship....

In fact, if they took the best bits of Freelancer and the best bits of X3, you would have a good game. I suspect, however, that any attempt to do this would end up with the worst bits of both.

Obvious ones for me would be: Fallout, Robocod, Starcraft, UFO: Enemy Unknown (done properly, none of this UFO shit they put out recently. It might have had higher res graphics, but it was a step backward in every other way), and Stunt Car Racer.

God, Ive just realised that many of those games are probably older than a fair amount of 5punkers.

Actually I've just though of a game I've always wanted a sequel for:

Beneath a Steel Sky

Oh man I love that game so much, I had the original on the Amiga and somewhere I still have the Dave Gibbons comic that came with it

http://www.kawakima.de/bass/content/comic2.jpg

Best intro sequence to a game ever, sod shitty graphics intros, it had it's own comic as an intro!!

*fades into nostalgic haze*

Hmm, asside the blatantly clear (eve 2, in the far distant future when eve just needs replacing)

C&C: Tiberian Twilight (and not done amazingly badly as I suspect the EA shite is going to be  )
Skies of Arcadia 2
Looking forward to unreal tournament 2007
Looking forward to halo 3 (just so I'll know how it all ends)

Think that's it narf

Delta horse 2, Delta horse Landwarrior, Black Hawk Down and Joint Operations? Think Beef browser, but with that sort of quality extended into the whole game.

to be fair that's basically what Eve does. All other attempts have been shit (Apart from X2 which was fun for a while). I know! Independence War 3...

GRIM FANDAGO 2
FULL THROTTLE 2
NOLF 3

EOT

As much as I loved Freelance (which is a lot) I'm not sure it deserves a sequel. I'd probably buy the sequel though.

You would say that :P

Personally I want an offline game. Also one where you can go to the planet's surface, which is one thing I didn't like about Eve when I played it, great game but that is missing.
