AMD to buy ATI?
I suspect this is will amount to nothing for a while at least, but we'll see.

hmm, that doesnt sound like a bad thing at all, really.Woo Elephant Yeah wrote:It makes sense from a business point of view.
Most "hardware enthusiasts"* seem to go for ATI & AMD so they would have a monopolised a large portion of that market.
Next they will be making Motherboards, and hey presto, AMD everything!
*Another WEY sweeping statement

I though one of the reason people liked AMD when they first started was that they were an alternative to the monlithic mega-corps of Apple/Motorola and MS/Intel.
That probably doesn't hold true any more, but I thought most people went for the best of breed CPU and GPU in their price range - this move could potentially restrict people who favour an AMD-nVidia or Intel-ATi combination.
If they bought up a board manufacturer, too, like say ABit (to keep with the nomenclature) they could offer a total package which would be very attractive to a lot of consumers.

"a report on a Chinese-language website citing a single source said to be close to the negotiations.
We're taking this with a big pinch of salt. The unnamed source, cited by Sohu.com, would provide no details of the deal."
seeing as how this is dated back to may, im not holding my breath. although it probably would be a good thing

Well, that's looking more likely.

I wasn't that surprised that they did it, only that AMD would need to borrow money to do it. They must have been pretty desperate.Dr. kitteny berk wrote:Houston, we have a confirmation

I read a couple of articles about how the merger makes complete sense long term. Due to the nature of processors moving towards their mega-multi-cores.. they will eventually bring in the gpu into the cpu setup, meaning that gpu and cpu developers become ever closer linked (Of course intel are big enough that they can do this stuff internally, but AMD needs the expertise to come from outside).
And of course in the short-term this means that production costs can be shared between the companies for the use of FABs etc.
I think this could make things very interesting come 5 years time.
