as opposed to berks server, where by he does all the work and we just have to show up and play. this way, berk has to fork out and will probably get the stick for anything going wrong... waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaitamomenteh!

At least this way the first 30 mins of any beef game isn't taken up by trying to find a decent server with enough slots on it.

The first 30 mins of any beef game I play are connecting to the server. Would there be any benefit to having our own server, assuming it was ranked and that some benevolent person was prepared to pay for it?
With ranked servers they have to be hosted by a "trusted partner" and you aren't able to install any mods or adjust the config very much, also the cost is dependant on the number of slots available and whether it is "branded" by the host.

Bonuses:
Full control over map cycles
Sensible adminning
Some level of reserved slots for 5punkers only
Downsides:
Cost. - You're looking £2/slot and ideally 32 slots for a decent game.
Well I know a benevolent priest who might be prepared to cough up 40 notes a month, which equates roughly to 20 slots unbranded or 24 branded if there were sufficient interest, benefit and perhaps additional contributions to increase the number of slots.
Looked at the out own server thing a bit more now.
Currently the best price is 4u servers, who offer 6months/32 slots/unbranded for just over £300. which would work out at £30 a head if 10 people were willing.
However, it'd need everyone to pay to make it work, and it'd have to be paid up front.
it's not the best plan to pay monthly - you get 20% off for buying 6 months at a time.
