hello,

I havent played CS or DoD for years - but my understanding is that you need Steam installed now in order to connect to the servers?

What is steam like nowadays? I know it was a nightmare when it first came out, but was wondering if it is any better now?

I installed it t'other day.

It kept doing things I didn't want it to do.

I uninstalled it half an hour later.

Your experience my differ, however.

Nope, sounds pretty much exactly the same experience I had with it 2 weeks ago.

Why cant they just release it as a normal retail game with manual downloads and updates like everybody else.

This is the reason I won't play Counterstrike, because it keeps crashing and hanging when running through Steam, so there's no way I'm gonna pay money for something I'm not even sure will work properly.

hmm. wierd. Ive not had any problems with steam myself.

But then, i installed it ages ago, and my memory is legendarily poor, so it could have been the trickiest install ever. Certainly doesnt give me any problems now, though.

What problems have people been having with it then?
I'll see if any of it jogs my memory

Steam's always seen pretty decent to me, though I've only had it installed for a couple of weeks, and just used it to play Half Life again, and preload Half Life 2.

Although I wont buy HL2 over steam, as I'd very much like to have a hard copy of the game.

forgive me if theres an obvious reason, but why preload hl2 if you're going to buy it from the shops anyway? You wont be able to play it till youve got the hardcopy, unless you buy it off steam.

And if youve got the hardcopy, you wont need to have preloaded it.

I preloaded it when I didn't know when it'd be released. If I found out it was going to be months and months away then I would of bought it over steam to play CS : Source.
Besides, this way, when I get it, i wont have to install it or anything, just plonk in the CD Key and it's ready to go.

steam has only ever screwed up once for me, but i couldn't get it uninstalled so i now have 2 version installed

It was a nightmare for me to install, but that was before I got broadband, when it was finally done I thought I was ready to play but then it started updating every single one of my games at the same time, very unpleasant on dial-up!.

I had to backup and delete the game files from the steam folder that I didn't want to play (at the time) just to get CS updated, it took forever.

But now that I have broadband I can't say I've had any problems, although the regular updates are annoying (but necessary I guess)
