Driving games

Post by Nickface »

What are some good driving games out there for the PC? TMN has been fun, but I'm looking for something with a little more meat on the bones, so to speak.

if you still want a bit of knock about fun, have a look at flat out, or Crashday. Both are updated rip-offs of demolition derby. Flatouts probably quite cheap now (or check your local carpetsoft specialist)

if you want realism, then have a look at Gran turismo Racing or Granturismo Legends (GTR or GTL)

Or theres always Toca:race driver 182378, or what ever version there on now..

They are okay games, as good as there is probably on PC*, but they have a very small number of cars and tracks compared to the console games.

Similarly to PS2 Gran Turismo and Xbox Forza Motorsport they tout themselves as simulations, while my real-world experience doesn't stretch beyond Kart racing or a bit of (ahem) unoffical rallying, I would say they are a piece of piss compared to the real thing. Grand Prix Legends was a simulation too far, however and was virtually unplayable in full sim mode.

*unless the Need for Speed or Juiced ports are more your thing, as more serious games do not feature modified Vauxhall Novas

Edit: The Colin McRae rally games are okay on PC, if you don't mind the lack of on-track opponents typical of rally games.

Personally, the only racing games i bother playing are project gotham, and forza.

They're also the only reason i own/use an xbox at all.

On the PC (that springs to mind/google)

Fun/Silly

BattleRacer
Need for speed whatever
Outrun
Trackmania (sunrise)

Serious/Simmy

The GTR stuff anham mentioned.

Hmm, I was looking for a good online racing game a while ago and this might be it, I'll try the demo later on.

If you dont mind slightly non-serous (but still not exactly "arcade") I would heartily recommend the Need for Speed Underground games. Extremely entertaining, for all their street racer silliness.

yeah, NFS:U 1 was a lot of fun for sure. NFS:U 2 was pretty cool with its entire city to drive around in, but I hate how you have to make your car hideous to advance the story. I DO NOT want a shitty vinyl that is uglier than Cortney Love on the side of my RX-7. :x

I haven't played NFS: Most Wanted but I've heard it's a lot of fun.

Also, I second the Colin Mc Rae suggestion, as rally racing fucking owns.

Actually, this, hard. Colin McRae games are win.

This opinion is only mildy influenced by my neighbour having worked on the game.

I just picked up Need for Speed: Most Wanted. It was only $20 at Best Buy so I figured "What the hell?" It's been pretty good to me thus far, but it sucked at first because I don't know shit about cars. Luckily, as far as upgrading goes, you don't NEED to have the shitty vinyls or the other fancy shit on your cars. I've been doing my best to keep my cars as non descript as I can because I'm not into the whole "ricing out" thing.

i might have to give this a go, due to years of console racing games ive become a master of taking out other cars. games like burnout make me squeel with joy
