Minerva Metastasis 1 & 2 mod

Post by spoodie »

It's listed on Steam so you may have seen it before, I played it at the weekend and it's very good and I suggest you play it if you liked HL2. As a series of maps it's very well made and there's an atmospheric plot but I won't give you any spoilers. Get it here: http://www.hylobatidae.org/minerva/phosphenes.shtml

Parts 1 & 2 are available, hopefully more to come.

I should have said, it's a single player mod that drops you on a Combine controlled island which you must infiltrate. I can't say who you are supposed to be or who the person sending you messages is as it's all very ambiguous, which adds to the atmosphere. I'm not going to say anything more as that would spoil it, just try it if you liked HL2.

The download is a .exe and handles the installation, just have to fire it up from the Steam menu once it's done.

This has been mentioned in Edge's Most Played section this month. If you've finished Episode 1 and want a bit more HL2 action I suggest you check it out. Not as good as Episode 1 or HL2 but definately well made and entertaining.

Having the ball things without a grav gun was a bit annoying, as was the person telling you what to do. Hopefully you get to kill them.

I think running away, preferably into the water is the best course of action with those balls. And unfortunately you don't get to kill the obnoxious twunt that's telling you what to do, at least not so far.

It's a bit... sparse.
It's very nicely modelled, but not a lot happened. Kill a few Combine, press a button. Repeat.

The final episode is now available: http://mods.moddb.com/5803/minerva/

I think I'll go back and play all this again when the Orange Box is done with.

Part 3 of 4 is quite good (so far). The signposting could be better and it's a little contrived in places: you're without a weapon for a while, but when you do finally get one it disintegrates combine weapons so you can't get ammo. Your punishment for a few misses is a slog back to the last infinite ammo crate.
It's quite cinematic though, I'll give it that. Some great scripted sequences. I'll continue with it once the anger it causes dies down :)
