I use Winamp to listen to music, it has a small, clean interface, I click play and listen to some stuff, the Rain Forest colour theme has excellent contrast on my rather blurry LCD and it remembers it's window position.

I use WMP10 to view videos, each night I kick off various mirror tasks to grab the latest stuff from various sites, and WMP10 remembers my preferred sort order of 'Date Added' so the new stuff is always at the bottom.

WMP11 re-sorted alphabetically on file name every time I restarted it - it's a sort order that would never be useful to me - why would I want to view a thousand 001.mpg's before getting to the appropriate 002.mpg? They are in ordered, dated subdirectories for a reason! System Restor'd.

My main irritation is with the arrogance of these programs that assume they are the only program you'll ever use - so all your sorting, classification and grouping has to be done within them. I sort my files using a directory structure as it's filesystem agnostic, and is retained whatever program, operating system, network or backup devices you have.

How much have you used iTunes? If you use the playlist system well; the smart playlists work very well. I can concur with the update system, but it hasn't been an issue with me, it keeps all your info, so apart from those extra 3 minutes, there is no big issue there. Overall, I feel it is nicer mainly for its simplicity. It has a nice search function (I remember WMP had a very hidden search function). And to question Dog Pants, Why not have it sorted by Artist? And you can configure it to sort otherwise; even by your own choice!

Blimey, this thread's grown since I last looked at it. Answering this without checking the rest of the thread so I don't forget: I've had a quick look to see if I can configure it differently and can't see any way (I'm talking about the Sony software here, but I get the same impression from iTunes and WMP), but to be honest when I have Winamp to do it how I want to I can't raise the enthusiasm to try very hard. I prefer my music arranged by genre because I can listen to one artist's album in the car on CD, so at home I prefer a mix of my favourite tunes. In fact, that goes for any MP3 media - the big restriction with Mrs Pants' Sony thing is that unlike my MP3 player you can't just copy the files to it like removable media, you're forced to use their interface. Combined with it scanning my hard drives for every audio file and putting them in one big list, categorised by artist, makes it very time consuming to find the ones she wants. It'd be far easier for me just to be able to navigate to the folder they're in because I've put all the tracks she wants in one place.
I'm not going so far as to say iTunes is shit because to be honest I've very rarely used it, and even disabled it because I was sick of my firewall having to block the thing from connecting to the internet. WMP I still use when I just want to select a few tracks manually so I can just right click on them and play's there at the top of the menu (and it loads quicker than Winamp). The Sony thing, however, I'd rather live without.

Actually I use winamp on my PC as it's a nice little app. I'd rather use iTunes but I don't want the startup stuff on my gaming PC and it's no good for 5punk radio broadcasts.

Ah yes, quite possibly the best thing about iTunes ever, is the way (If you tell it to automatically sort files) that it will order your music; I designated a folder on my C drive, to contain all my music. And iTunes makes a seperate folder for every artist, inside each of their albums, then each file inside this is named with track number and track name. This means that like FJ is trying to say, say you need to backup, its all in one place, and sorted to perfection...

You can order files by any of the options across the top of the screen (Including genre).

And another very useful feature on iTunes is its ability to convert file types; a feature I've not seen on nearly enough of the other media players.

I know I'm not gonna convince some of you guys to move to iTunes, but I'd like to show you that if you broadened your mind a bit, that mac stuff doesn't equal evil.

or you can do it yourself, from the start (as i'm sure many of us have)

it's hardly difficult to sort (coming from someone with 8k tracks, across 664 folders, organised *exactly* how he wants them)

Oh, fuck off. personally i base all of my opinions off of my own experiences, along with those of my peers (only the ones i trust though)

i have played with itunes, and didn't get on with it at all.
i have also fucked about with linux enough to know it's not for me (same with macos)

as far as apple goes, i'd probably buy an ipod if i had a use, and i'd probably have bought a mini, but they lost the only thing that interested me when they switched to x86.

And if you want to accuse anyone of not being open minded, i suggest you find someone else.

It can stream shoutcast playlists and it's very good at organising MP3 tag info.
