SiN Episodes first impressions

Post by spoodie »

I've played and hour, maybe a bit more, and it's not bad so far. Similar to Half-life, as you would imagine. They've obviously reused a lot of stuff and that's not necessarily a bad thing. Pretty much the first thing you see is a large pair of physics enabled breasts, which also isn't a bad thing. There's lots of explody things and the obligatory conspiracy plot.

What do you think?

I'm not sure yet.
I've got as far as the Self Destruct Sequence In A Lab Full Of Mutants bit.
I like the idea of health in gas form, but I was surprised to get the shotgun so early on.
I also seem to have managed to get 136 Health. I'm not sure that's right.

I approve of the signs:

How odd- it did my order of HL2EP1 ok a few minutes ago.

Sin really needs to get it's Use sorted. It's very nice being able to wind the windows up and down and sit in any seat in Jessica's car, but when you're being shot with a mini gun at the time and can't get out it's fucking useless.

Great webcomic material, though.

I never noticed that. I wondered why I couldn't ignite the wobbly gas cloud thingy by shooting at it, must need me to shoot the pipe.

Hurrah! It am teh finished!
I'm quite impressed, really. Dispite being rock hard in places and annoying me to the point of shouting a lot, it kept me coming back for more.
It's a bit early to tell how it'll go just now. I'll probably get the next episode, but something will need to really grab my attention if it wants me to continue after that.

Things I Like:
- Nice variation in locations
- Amusingly purile thoughout
- Enemies! With Jetpacks!
- Shifting difficulty to keep it difficult but doable.
- Secrets
- Many many stats

Things That Annoy Me:
- The Use key is a bit hit and miss
- Shifting difficulty only makes things easier once you've died a shed load of times.
- Enemies that seem to spawn from impossible places (eg behind open doors)
- Very dark, in places. I keep wanting to use Gordon Freeman's torch

God, I hate this in games and always have. I could only play Doom 3 at night and with all the lights out (which was rare as I don't live alone and Mrs Pants unsurprisingly doesn't like sitting in the dark) or else I couldn't see a thing. I got bored of it pretty quickly.

This. Especially annoying as firing your gun and flaming barrels doesn't seem to light up the dark areas either. This Source engine is starting to look dated now.

The wild variations in difficulty can be a pain, I started thinking this is too easy then was getting pwned. I've found it's just a case of finding a good place to hide evens it up a bit.

The little soldier are great for satisfying headshots. They have bigger, angrier friends though who can be real arses.
I think you meet them around the time of the massive monster in the construction site.

Possibly. It's got it's good points and is challenging in places but it's no Half-life 2. It's a good all round shooter but with nothing particularly new and the story is a bit lame but it's the shooting I want. I'll probably be buying the next episode, assuming they are continuing with it.

Yup, that was fun, just challenging enough to be fun without being annoying.

Took 2:51 in total, with difficulty medium-ish and skill curve thing default.

Well worth the tenner.

Just finished this and I thought is was really good. The menu screen has a nice Garbage-esque soundtrack, there's a good sense of humour thoughout (screenshots hopefully posted later), the action's pretty good with a couple of nice set pieces, and the explodey things are nice and plentiful. Oh yeah, and those physics enabled breasts of course (odd how they're more fascinating than real ones, must be an abstract thing). The end had a lot of potential before being let down by the actual fighting, and the way it just fades out with no conclusion was disappointing. However, the outtakes after the credits made up for that.

I'd certainly buy the next one.
